Sedentary lifestyle another factor in obesity problem?

Comments re article 57366 HealthyLivingLink NYT story on School Snack Food By Jon Halsey

Here's another take on this subject from Rick Moran at American Thinker:
"Yes, we have an obesity problem among our children. But it is unclear if high calorie, high fat foods are mostly to blame.

"Chips, soda, candy bars, and other snacks have been sold in schools for decades. The problem isn't so much what kids eat - especially since even nutritionists admit that children need more fat and calories than adults in their diet - but rather their lack of exercise.

We have the most sedentary youth in the industrialized world and getting kids into healthy physical activities will go much farther in reducing their weight than any ban on candy bars."
When I see folks in the check-out lanes with four, six even eight cartons of soda in their carts along with boxes of snack cakes, etc., I question whether the schools are the problem. Jon Halsey, Knifley

Thanks, Jon Halsey. You raise a good point insofar as sedentary lifestyle is a factor: Of course sedentary lifestyle is a factor, especially in obesity. And activity would go a long way toward solving the problem. But might not changing diet solve the problem, too? Would a combination of diet and exercise? Might be both are needed - more exercise, and better diets. - EW

Memories of O.G. Rowe, his store at Chance, KY

He was writer's first teacher, and a continuing mentor even when the writer went with O.G. on his mail route. O.G. Rowe's store was a major educational institution on Harvey's Ridge & Chance, as well as its market, and civic and social center. Bobby Morrison also got on the job training there, earning big bucks bringing in the firewood for the stove which warmed Rook games to as late as midnight. And then, there is the famous Randall Sullivan/Bobby Morrison gunpowder caper. The explosives was made in Ethel Scott's Chemistry Class, and left its mark on that long remembered stove. There's more here, another huge chapter for the history, when somebody writes, assembles, or writes the Book on Chance. - CM

By Bobby D. Morrison

I have very fond memories of the O. G. & Irene Rowe store.

My grandfather, Charlie Morrison, lived on top of the hill just past the store and we would go down there at night with him when I was very young.

Our family later expanded the house and lived there for many years.

I can remember my next youngest brother begging Grandpa for a nickel to buy a Coke until he would go to sleep. The store was the gathering and gossip place of Harvey's Ridge & Chance late evening and night.

HealthyLivingLink: NYT story on School Snack Food

And a note on the health benefits of Netflix

CM Editorial Comment

There's a story on the New York Times, website, suggested by Mary Keltner, Gradyville, KY, about nutritional guidelines for snack foods sold in schools it's: U.S. Releases New Rules for School Snack Foods. It's about how to combat the epidemic of obesity.

Not included in the story is an anecdotal coincidence: A young parent says that his kids are eating more nutritional foods because of Netflix. "We seldom watch regular television," he said, "and now the kids don't demand sugary cereals or other processed foods." The difference, he said, was that the ads for unhealthy foods seen on regular Tv aren't on Netflix. "We've seen a big difference," he said.

To that, he might have added the Health and Family Finances Hazards of School Fundraisers which capitalize on the sale of high priced, unneeded and unwanted, bad behavior promoting fat, sugary food sales. Aren't there better ways to do it? - EW
