Suggests new school name honor veterans

By Robby Shelton
Personal commentary

With all the talk about the new school and what the name should be, in my opinion it would be nice to honor all the past and present men and women who serve or have served our country and provided our freedom. Why not name it Adair County Veterans Elementary School --Robby Shelton

National Rehabilitation Awareness Week is Sept. 16-22, 2012

National Rehabilitation Awareness Week raises awareness of the importance of getting the appropriate care after an injury or accident.

By Anabelle Burkett

Rehabilitation can be the key to getting back to functioning at a level where you can live at home to enjoy your family. Going for therapy is just like going back to school, because you may have to "relearn" information already acquired. In therapy, there are tasks that may require physical activities like learning to walk again or learning to transfer from your bed to a chair. You may need to learn to read again, speak clearly or improve your memory.

26th Annual Green River Lake Volunteer Lakeshore Cleanup

By Andrea O'Brian, Park Ranger
Green River Lake

Thanks to the hard work of 218 volunteers and the support of 83 sponsors, the 26th Annual Green River Lake Volunteer Lakeshore Cleanup was another big success.

On Saturday, September 15, 2012 approximately 129 bags of trash, 56 tires, a swimming pool, 2 TVs, a small refrigerator, box springs, and a cooler were picked up from the lakeshore with a cost savings to the government of over $14,250.66. Volunteers at the event consisting of school groups, boy scouts, cub scouts, and community members all worked along side one another for a common cause of enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Green River Lake. Due to this combined effort and concern for the environment, the shore line at Green River Lake is cleaner for all to enjoy.
We at the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Green River Lake would like to express our deep appreciation for the time, energy and support that made this event possible. Thanks again to all the volunteers and sponsors listed below who made this event a success.

Wants new school name to be about our future

Amanda Firkins writes:
I agree that Casey should be recognized as he has been, but there are others in our history who should also have had the chance to be recognized, and who played significant roles in the start of education in Adair County. Casey also has a county and a house in recognition of his name among other things. I feel that the new school should not represent our history so much as it should the future of our children, and a name that would describe the coming together of our students from the different schools they attend now and have attended in the past is what I would personally like to see for the new elementary school. - Amanda Firkins

A Statement for Colonel Wm. Casey Elementary School

By Billy Joe Fudge
Personal Commentary

I have the greatest respect for Dakota Meyer and would advocate for the attachment of his heroic name to just about anything for all the apparent reasons.

However, I must stand with Mr. Watson and others by recommending that Coloner William Casey's name not be removed from the school be it old or new to which it has already been applied. - Billy Joe Fudge

A Scene in the Life of Colonel William Casey, Pioneer

Historian Mike Watson weighs in on the side of keeping the name: 'Colonel William Casey Elementary School' exactly as it is, as first advocated by fellow historian Ken Hill. Mr. Watson writes, Casey was the man who brought the first teacher to what is now Adair County. He deserves the recognition of having his name remain on CWC school.

By Mike Watson

The following is a short extract from History of Adair County, originally written in the early 1900s by Judge Rollin T. Hurt under the pseudonym John Avroe Steele and published as a serial in the Adair County News. The series of articles were reprinted in the Columbia, KY, Daily Statesman in the 1980s with some minor editing; later published in book form as Hurt's History of Adair County, edited by Mike Watson, and with some additional data.
