National Rehabilitation Awareness Week is Sept. 16-22, 2012

National Rehabilitation Awareness Week raises awareness of the importance of getting the appropriate care after an injury or accident.

By Anabelle Burkett

Rehabilitation can be the key to getting back to functioning at a level where you can live at home to enjoy your family. Going for therapy is just like going back to school, because you may have to "relearn" information already acquired. In therapy, there are tasks that may require physical activities like learning to walk again or learning to transfer from your bed to a chair. You may need to learn to read again, speak clearly or improve your memory.

All rehab is not the same! Remember that it is your health and your choice on where you go to recover. Think about how many hours of therapy are given, what type of equipment is used, will a doctor see you every day, and are the surroundings comfortable for your recovery. People undergoing rehabilitation should be motivated not only by their caregivers and therapists but also by their surroundings. Choose a place that specializes in rehabilitation and individualizes your plan of care to get you home sooner and stronger.
