Baptizing in a Creek, etc., interruptus Dave Rosenbaum writes: Knowing that CM is a crossroads of religious discourse, I pass along an account of a Casey County baptizing of many decades ago. A friend of mine, who was a witness to this event, recently told me this story: The baptizing took place at a creek and was well-attended, (I recall several baptizings at the Baptizing Hole on Conover Branch, near the current entrance to Burton Stone.) There were several candidates for the rite and during the event two large dogs wandered up ( one male and one female). As the service continued, the dogs became coupled in the act of procreation. The attending yelps, barks and howls effectively stopped the proceedings until a large gentleman in bib overalls grabbed both dogs and forcibly separated them, causing further pitiful sounds from both mutts. Finally, the dogs quieted and the baptizing continued.Only someone who has attended a baptizing at a creek could fully appreciate this story. - Dave Rosenbaum 2012-05-30 10:04:33 | Comments | Printable version
Spectrum assures Adair Hospital Board sale is still active Spectrum Partners representatives say, despite rumors, negotiations for sale of assets of Westlake Regional Hospital, though delayed, are ongoing; also say they are staying, despite rumors to the contrary. Financial hemorrhaging under Spectrum Care leadership continues, as does gloomy vector for revenue side of operations. Wake like meeting lightly attended. By Ed Waggener Interim Westlake Regional Hospital CEO Tim Menton assured the Adair County Hospital Board of Trustees and the small gathering at the Board's regular May meeting, May 29, 2012, that the negotiations with LifePoint for the sale of the hospital is ongoing, but that the target date of the sale by June 30, 2012, may no longer be realistic. He said that a sale by July 31, 2012, may be doable. He assured the board that LifePoint is doing a very good job with their due diligence side of the negotiations, but made no mention of the hand the people of Adair County is holding. Chever requests more specificity on time Comments re article 52229 Larry Smith Fog is thick as a brickChever writes: What time is it? That would be nice other than "he called us a few minutes ago." --CheverApologies, Chever. You are exactly right in your criticism. Usually we make a note of the exact time, but this morning I just remember that it was after 5amCT and before 5:40amCT. We've changed the story to be as specific as can be, given the techno-challenged staff in this morning. I don't know how to retrieve time from the desk phone, but I'm planning to learn, as soon as one of the Grevans - Graham or Evan - is back at the office. - EW 2012-05-30 06:12:19 | Comments | Printable version
Larry Smith: Fog is thick as a brick Larry Smith called ColumbiaMagazine.com a few minutes ago on his morning commute to The WAVE FM 92.7's studio and transmitter atop the Russell Creek Hills to warn everyone about driving conditions. "The fog is thick as a brick," he said. "It's the thickest layer of fog I've seen in years. I have to roll down the window and hang my head out to see if a car is coming." At the time he had just safely made the perilous turn from Greenhills Road onto Kentucky 80 east. Usually, he said, the worry about fog is around Green River Lake and the drift whichever way the wind is blowing - usually northeast. "This is different," he said. "It's everywhere." However, he wouldn't say, even with coaxing, that the fog is one for the World Record Book of Guinnesses. "I've seen worse," he said. "But this is bad. Real bad." 2012-05-30 05:46:56 | Comments | Printable version

Poetry: In Kentucky, by Ray Montgomery (1889-1955) In Kentucky by Ray Montgomery, circa 1901 Kentucky raises hogs and Kentucky raises cornRay Montgomery wrote the verse above as an 11 year old school boy. The poem is from the collection of Donna Harper and her late husband, James F. Harper, a nephew of the boy poet and grandson of Bruce Montgomery, Ray's brother. Bruce Montgomery was known to the community as "Mr. Bruce," or "Judge Montgomery," the grandchildren called him "Daddy Bruce." The other Montgomery children were George, Garnett, and Gordon. "Beckham" in the poem was Kentucky Governor J.C.W. Beckham, who is most remember in Adair County for a pardon which converted a few grateful Burtons to the Democratic cause. 2012-05-30 04:37:09 | Comments | Printable version
