Sad day in Portland, as beloved treasure burns down Building with a lot of memories goes up in smoke Click on headline for story with photo(s) By Rebecca Beard Today, Friday, April 13, 2012, one of the Portland community's most beloved treasures went down in a blaze of glory. The Portland Recreation Center, better known as "the old skating rink" burnt to the ground today. It was already closed when I came to Adair County, but for my husband, Tony Beard, and a whole lot of other people, a lot of memories were burnt to the ground today too. It's just a sad day for Portland. 2012-04-13 21:09:38 | Comments | Printable version

JIM: The Tandy Hotel, yet another name The establishment was always known for setting a good table. Mr. Tandy also had a farm near Bliss, which he sold before removing to Bloomington, Indiana Comments re article 46035. JIM New Adair Hotel went by many names in 79 year history By JIM Seeing this served as a reminder that I recently came across yet another name for the hotel. A brief article in the Nov. 21, 1917 News stated (in part) that "Mr. Geo. H. Kruse, State Hotel Inspector, was here last Wednesday. He went through the Tandy Hotel, and reported to this office that he found the rooms and bedding in first-class condition, superior to many country hotels. He also dined at the noon hour, stating that he was furnished with an elegant meal..." At that time, the hotel was owned by Judge Junius Hancock. About a month later, Judge Hancock sold the business -- lock, stock, and room keys -- to C.G."Gus" Jeffries. In early January, 1918, the News, in reporting renovations Mr. Jeffries had made, noted that "Mr. Tandy, the former proprietor, has been sick for more than a year, and it was impossible for him to give the business the attention it deserved, but his hotel was above average, as his table was good as many country hotels." The Tucker Station High Tunnel Initiative - the Saga Continues Part II Foundation building is exhausting work - made so much easier with the help of Sam Merritt Click on headline for Second Installment with photo(s). Ffor 1st installment: The High Tunnel Initiative at Tucker's Station Farms By Barbara Armitage I have a whole new respect for the men who built the railroads. The goal for the day is to pound the 38 base poles that will support the rafter/arches into the ground. According to our USDA soils map the ground is mostly clay loam - that doesn't sound so bad does it? Each pole only has to be pounded in 2 feet - that's doable right? Our brand new sledge hammer weighs in at a mere 8 pounds - 4 ounces less than our first child. Now what can possibly go wrong?
