Carol Perkins: English teachers

The year the National Council of Teachers of English Conference was held in Louisville

By Carol Perkins

Years ago, the National Council of Teachers of English Conference was held at the Convention Center in Louisville. Attending any national conference was a luxury for teachers in rural areas, so the location afforded us the privilege of attending. As a matter of fact, all four of us (the entire department) were given the day off to go.

Part of hosting an event such as this, which brought thousands of English teachers to our state, required a combined effort among local officers, state officers and the state board. So, when asked to "host" a session, I gladly agreed. My task was to greet those who came to the session, pass out the guest speaker's material, be of service to them with glasses of water, and smile.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Always willing one -a sonnet

Always willing one
-a sonnet reflecting on Brighton Beach Memoirs, a play by Neil Simon
Unequal are the tasks kin undertake
and often falls the burden on a few
who learn to be correctors of mistake
and masters of the better things to do.

Uneven are the paths friends walk along
and many stumbling hold the outstretched hands
which train to be the necessary strong
and saviors from unnoticed tightening bands

.Unbalanced are the thanks relations give
and blinded by strong habit see no lack
when letting others do is way to live
and change acknowledged follows slow hard whack.

Dependence on the always willing one
at last will wear away what can be done.

- Robert Stone, 11 March 2012

It's Just Me Again No. 370 by Chuck Hinman. Windmills, Remember Them?
The next earlier Chuck Hinman column Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 302. A self taught lesson

By Chuck Hinman

Yes, I remember windmills like an old friend! They dotted the countryside of farms in the Midwest. Land was laid out on the township and range system. The average farm was a quarter-section or 160 acres. There were four windmills on every square mile of land. So you see, windmills were very visible.
