Kentucky was border state in Civil War, and hoped to be neutral

Comments on Civil War display at Lindsey Wilson College

The display at Lindsey Wilson College's Library, 235 Holloway Drive, gives a concise overview of Kentucky's part in the Civil War. However it does not say that Kentucky was a NEUTRAL state! Kentucky was a border state, and at the beginning many hoped it could be neutral, but this was not to be. Very early Union camps were established to recruit soldiers.

Superintendent Treece announces he will not continue in post

June 30, 2012 is Mr. Treece's last day. Board starts process of replacement. Board names member Mike Harris to Screening Committee, Balance of Screen Committee will be named by constituent groups.. Mr. Treece's statement below

Superintendent Darrell Treece announced tonight that he will not be returning as superintendent aftter June 30, 2012, and the board immediately began the process of searching for a a new person to assume the leadership position.The action followed an executive session in the regular school board meeting, Thursday, February 16, 2012, near the close of the session after which Mr. Treece read the following statement:

Russell Co. designated KY Work Ready community in progress

Russell County was designated as a Work Ready Community in Progress because it is close to meeting the criteria to be certified. Warren, Davies, and Woodford Counties get designation.
Adair County has an aggressive plan under the leadership of Chairman A.W. Reed, to earn the designation of Work Ready Community. News from the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet

FRANKFORT, KY - Governor Steve Beshear announced today that Daviess, Warren and Woodford counties have been certified as Kentucky's first-ever Work Ready Communities, and Russell County was the only county to receive Work Ready Community (in progress) status, meaning they should be no more than months away from becoming only the fourth Work Ready Community in the State.

Sherman Minton Bridge to be re-opened

Concrete barrier walls to be replaced with temporary barricades

Louisville, KY (February 16, 2012) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is preparing for the reopening of the Sherman Minton Bridge (I-64 Bridge beween Louisville, KY and New Albany, IN( by moving concrete barrier walls and replacing them with orange barrels and signs. Because of the time and equipment required, removal of the heavy barriers has to begin days in advance of the bridge reopening. Barrier wall will be removed from the following locations beginning at 9amET on Friday, February 17, 2012:

Wallace L. Harris, Jr., Franklin, KY (d. Feb. 12, 2012)

He was retired from Houchens Industries, was of the Baptist faith, and was a Navy Veteran, and had relatives in Adair County, KY

Mr. Wallace L. "Walley" Harris, Jr., age 78 of Woodburn, died Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green, KY.

Funeral service will be Thursday, February 16, 2012, at 1pmCT at Crafton Funeral Home, 512 East Cedar Street, Franklin KY with burial in Woodburn Cemetery with military rites being conducted by the Simpson County Honor Guard.

A set of keys were found this morning in my parents yard on Adair Avenue. If anyone has lost them please come by the Judge's Office, Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, to claim them. Kentucky EQIP Sign-Up Period runs through Feb. 29, 2012

USDA NRCS in Kentucky announces February 29, 2012 as the Second Application Period for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The current sign-up period runs through February 29, 2012. If you are interested in participating in EQIP or other Farm Bill conservation programs, you should contact your local NRCS office as soon as possible. Mitchell (Mickey) Carter, Russell Co., KY (1949-2012)

He was a member of a large, respected Russell County family. He leaves 11 direct living descendants. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and an auto body repairman

Fire destroys four vacant mobile homes at Windmill Home Park

Origin of fire still unknown. Location about 11 miles from firestation, on western side of Adair County, KY.

The Adair County Fire Dept responded to a mobile home fire at 9299 Edmonton Road, Columbia, KY, at 2:31amCT, on Thursday morning, February 16, 2012.

Upon arrival to the Windmill Mobile Home Park they found four vacant mobile homes engulfed in fire. They were a total loss. There were 10 firemen on the scene for around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The origin of the fire is still unknown.

Donald Hare comments on the Homeland Security Grant

Comments about Russell Co., KY Ambulance Service receives $953,059 grant

The grant that Ed Whitfield's office sent out: this is a 90/10 grant meaning the county will only have to pay a 10% match. This was a regional grant in which the Adair and Russell received the award jointly. In Adair County the agencies which will share in the grant funding were: Adair County Ambulance Service, Columbia Fire Department, Adair County Fire Department. Donald Hare, Public Affairs officer, Columbia/Adair County Fire Department.

Great Backyard Bird Count starts tomorrow! (Feb. 17-20, 2012)

It's an enjoyable past-time, whether you're an ornithologist or just know a few birds. In the past, Columbia/Adair County (Zip Code 42728) has been the top bird watching community in the state, one of the top birdwatching communities in the nation. As always, we'll post information throughout the four day period to see how Columbia/Adair County is doing. We'll be posting more throughout the day, and hope that all who have participated in past GBBC's will do so this year, get others to participate. Russell Co., KY Ambulance Service receives $953,059 grant

Homeland Security grant also helps Adair County first responders; is meant to enhance ability of organizations that are not affiliated with hospitals.

The Russell County Ambulance Service has been awarded a regional grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The $953,059 grant is for operations and safety, and will contribute to both Russell County Ambulance Service, and the Adair County Ambulance Service and Firefighters. The purpose of the AFG program is to enhance the ability of fire departments and emergency management service (EMS) organizations that are not affiliated with hospitals to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as first-responder personnel. Grants are awarded through a competitive process. Applications are reviewed on how the funds will fulfill the top priorities of the AFG program which are operations and safety, and vehicle acquisition. Information courtesy of Rep. The Blue Raiders (2-0) won the opener 9-1 on the strength of (Columbia, KY), senior Derek Cape's six scoreless innings and the nightcap with bookend big innings in a 7-6 come-from-behind effort.
