Snowball Special Hilltopper Rescue Reunion planned

A local note on the Snow of 1960: Adair County Road Supervisor Jobe Darnell reminded the County Judge this morning not to get too overjoyed with the nice weather we're enjoying. "You remember?," he said, "we had spring like weather in 1960, in January and then we got a terrible snow in March that year." Judge Melton hadn't learned the lesson. "I was around in 1960," she said, "but I didn't remember. I wasn't a year old." Those who were in school at Western Kentucky State College in 1960 may remember, and may have been stranded in Upton, Bonnieville, Park City, Elizabethtown, and Bonnieville and will want to take part in this reunion, now being organized. (We haven't heard of a reunion for the blizzard in Columbia that year, but pictures shared would be a nice touch. -CM

News from Western Kentucky University

Bowling Green, KY. - The Historic RailPark & Train Museum is seeking people who were part of the "Snowball Special" rescue efforts by the L&N Railroad. On March 9, 1960, masses of Western Kentucky State College (now Western Kentucky University) students were stranded by a raging blizzard while returning to Bowling Green from the NCAA Conference basketball game in Lexington, KY.

Mike Watson: Oh, for Names, Places and Pronunciation!

Update for Great Wooded South Lexicon, B.J. Fudge, Proprietor: Clarifying pronunciation of Uh-dair County, Cuh-well, and the real name of Petty''s Pettit's Fork Creek.

By Mike Watson

The Great Wooded South submissions have been less than a trickle of late, and they are missed. There is much to learn, one might say "a right smart bit," from the techno-jaw sessions. When reading CM, which I do daily, I often see items that appear to come from submitters "from off."

Then there are items from folk who don't adhere to the local "letter of the law" concerning place names. Now I understand that our tongues do not wrap 'round some words as they should; therefore, creating words that do not, as such, exist here. I'm certainly not a purist, anyone who hears me speak knows that! However, it does pain me considerable for the same to appear in print.
