Snowball Special Hilltopper Rescue Reunion planned

A local note on the Snow of 1960: Adair County Road Supervisor Jobe Darnell reminded the County Judge this morning not to get too overjoyed with the nice weather we're enjoying. "You remember?," he said, "we had spring like weather in 1960, in January and then we got a terrible snow in March that year." Judge Melton hadn't learned the lesson. "I was around in 1960," she said, "but I didn't remember. I wasn't a year old." Those who were in school at Western Kentucky State College in 1960 may remember, and may have been stranded in Upton, Bonnieville, Park City, Elizabethtown, and Bonnieville and will want to take part in this reunion, now being organized. (We haven't heard of a reunion for the blizzard in Columbia that year, but pictures shared would be a nice touch. -CM

News from Western Kentucky University

Bowling Green, KY. - The Historic RailPark & Train Museum is seeking people who were part of the "Snowball Special" rescue efforts by the L&N Railroad. On March 9, 1960, masses of Western Kentucky State College (now Western Kentucky University) students were stranded by a raging blizzard while returning to Bowling Green from the NCAA Conference basketball game in Lexington, KY.

"Nearly 1000 students slept in cars and buses in Upton, Park City, Elizabethtown, the Bonnieville movie theater and the Munfordville Baptist Church", states Sharon Tabor, Executive Director. "The team made it to Elizabethtown and didn't return to Bowling Green until after the game in Louisville, KY. Governor Bert Combs aided in the effort by sending out a call to the L&N Railroad and the National Guard.

The L&N sent two trains to pick up stranded passengers along the route. Some walked over a mile in 13-20 inches of snow to the Bonnieville and Munfordville depots. The National Guard delivered the students safely to Western Kentucky's campus after arriving at the L&N Depot in Bowling Green. Days later many of these students re-boarded the L&N for a trip to Louisville to cheer on the WKU Basketball team as they played against Ohio State for a place in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen Tournament."

The Historic RailPark is planning a reunion of those who experienced Mother Nature's efforts to de-rail the team and its supporters. If you, or someone you know, were part of this event as a student, basketball team member, college official, L&N employee, American Red Cross, or a member of the National Guard unit involved in the rescue efforts, contact Sharon Tabor at stabor@historicrailpark.com or 270-745-7317. Please reply by February 5, 2012.
