News of the Adair County Academic Team

The Adair County High School Academic Team captured yet another Governor's Cup District Championship on January 28. 2012. This marks the team's 7th championship in a row at District, which was held this year at Russell County High School. The team stormed through the Quick Recall rounds undefeated to capture the 1st Place trophy in that competition once again this year. In addition, the Future Problem Solving team swept all 1st Place rankings in their competition to continue their year-to-year winning streak.

Once again, the team had the most individuals of any school to qualify for Region in the Written Assessment portion of the competition. Adair followed the school's legacy of success by notching 1st place honors in 5 Written Assessment categories.

Eddie Franklin (Grade 12), Heather Jackson (Grade 11), and Kyle Mann (Grade 12) helped lead the charge by earning 1st Place scores in their respective events. Franklin earned the top honor in both Social Studies and Mathematics. This was Franklin's first sweep of two categories as a high school competitor at District. Jackson earned her first pair of championships as well by winning the Language Arts and Arts and Humanities competition. Likewise, Mann battled to earn his first championship by winning the Science Written Assessment.

Coach Brett Reliford commented on the achievement, "After the loss of several critical members last year, I am thrilled that today's leaders have had their chance to shine and let everyone know that they had no intentions of missing a step from where previous teams have left off. Our 1st Place winners from this year have been very good for a long while, which is evident with results from the past couple of years. A lot of times, the only people outscoring them were their own teammates who have now graduated, so I'm proud that they have fought so hard to get their names at the top of this year's list of awards and to keep the program's prestige."

The three 1st place winners featured three of the four starting spots of the championship Quick Recall team as well. Teammate Matt Rogers (Grade 10) has made leaps and bounds improvements as part of that 4-member lineup also, and he showed this not only with his contributions on the buzzer, but also by finishing 4th in both Language Arts and Arts and Humanities in his first year as an individual competitor.

Upperclassmen joining the Top 5 placements that advance to Regional competition were Jesse Woods (Grade 12) and Cody Giles (Grade 11). This was both competitors' first year as Academic Team members, showcasing their skills earlier in the Fall league competition leading up to this weekend's District Championships. Woods finished 5th in Math to earn a spot at the Regional Championships coming up in Mid-February. Giles grabbed 5th Place in Social Studies to advance to Region as well.

Remarkable still is the accomplishments of this year's wave of Freshmen at the District level. This year marked the most Freshmen competitors representing Adair at District during the multi-year run the team has had at the top and tied for the most Freshmen the school has ever placed in the Top 5 at District.

9th graders Anna Parson, Landon Coomer, and Jessi Taylor all landed a spot at Region in their first years at competitors by notching Top 5 finishes. Parson finished an impressive 3rd Place in Language Arts. Coomer and Taylor finished 4th and 5th respectively in the Composition competition.

"There is a lot of solid work going on with our underclassmen," Coach Reliford remarked. "Most of our team's Freshmen in the past haven't gotten a chance to compete until battling through the high standards upperclassmen set ahead of them, but I am very pleased with where this group has progressed in just this short amount of time. It takes a lot to reach the top, but if this group will commit to the program like previous students have, I see nothing but good things heading their way as well."

Quick Recall starters include Eddie Franklin, Kyle Mann, Heather Jackson, and Matt Rogers, who all earned the maximum number of three competing slots at Region. Future Problem Solving members competing at District were the team composed of Emmalee Baker (Grade 11), Roslin Wilson (Grade 11), Kyle Castaneda (Grade 10), and Sarah McQuaide (Grade 9). Fellow FPS members Abby Walker (Grade 10), Alison Feese (Grade 10), Leane Blackwelder (Grade 10), and Amber Turner (Grade 9) also composed the squad preparing for District Championships. Accompanying the Quick Recall team and their bid to Region will be competitors Timothy Watson (Grade 9), Katherine Blackwelder (Grade 9), Brittany Curry (Grade 9), Alan Godsey (Grade 9), and Laura Akin (Grade 9), along with individual medalists Anna Parson and Jessi Taylor.

The next step on the team's quest for State Finals is Regional competition at Bowling Green High School on February 14 and 18, where they are currently reigning Regional Champions for an astounding seven years in a row.
