Camp Boyle important part of Adair County, KY history

'One thing is for sure; the citizens of Adair County should erect an historical marker at the site of Camp Boyle, to the Camp itself, and to the 13th Kentucky volunteer Calvary. This is an important part of Adair County history that should not be forgotten' - CHRIS BENNETT

By Chris Bennett

In the winter of 1863 my GGG grandfather, Elisha Bennett, his son James Oliver, and his nephew Ananias made the long trip on horseback from the Fairplay area to Columbia, where they joined the Union army at Camp Boyle. At this location they enlisted in the 13th Kentucky volunteer cavalry on what is now the Barbee property. My grandfather was 43 years old, and his son was 19 years old. My grandfather was also a veteran of the war with Mexico, belonging to Captain Jack Squires Company.

More on Camp Boyle location

Ann Curtis writes:Camp Boyle was in a location most people probably drive past every day! According to Betty Jane Gorin's book "Morgan Is Coming," the Union camp was located just north of the Russell Creek bridge as one heads toward Campbellsville. The lay of the land in that area (broad, flat) makes it easy to imagine a camp there. Poetry by Robert Stone: Hope of always good

Hope of always good
-a sonnet for friends and almost friends past, present, and future
How sad the one who only can relate
to just one other any given time
and misses opportunities to sate
desires to augment rhythm, shape, and rhyme.

How woeful those who flit from here to there
and never stay to find the useful chance
of feeling cures that heavy cares repair
and blind uplifting moves that taste romance.

How satisfied the comforter who sees
the worthy attributes of all who come
within the help of easing sore unease
and hope of always good to further plumb.

A reason to be glad of new found friend
is further friendships may yours now transcend.

- Robert Stone, 22 January 2012

A plea for preservation of Southern Red Oak Fairgrounds Forest

Act of Nature exacted latest toll, but over the decades neglect has let this invaluable resource decline; writer says we, as a community can do better than that
Comments re photo 43537 Red Oak Jan 21 2012 lightning storm takes old friend

By Billy Joe Fudge

I wish that the Southern Oak Fairgrounds Forest could be sustained to perpetuity. Sadly however, we just don't seem to care as much for our children's and grandchildren's fairgrounds as our forefathers cared about ours.

JIM: Ben Carter, Overland to Santa Fe - Part 3 of 5

By JIM

In 1850, Adair County native Ben Carter, then a stripling lad of eighteen, took leave of the familial hearth and home in Breeding, Ky. and went west, briefly settling in Missouri until the spring of 1851, when he embarked on an adventure of a lifetime. Sixty years later, the Adair County News published a series of five letters from Mr. Carter which detailed his journey - an overland trip from Kansas City to Santa Fe.

Your humble transcriber took the liberty of correcting minor typographical errors; correcting and adding minor punctuation for clarification; and in a few instances, adding information in parentheses for clarification. The final installment will include a brief biographical sketch of Mr. Carter.

Part 3 of 5, published in the May 31, 1911 Adair County News.

A Pioneer Journey: Uncle Ben Carter Writes
of Wagon Journey to the Southwest, Made in 1851

The regiment finally got ahead of us. In a short time one of our boys was taken down with cholera and died in a few days. For his burial we placed the body on an undressed but dry buffalo skin and lowered it into the grave by holding the legs of the skin. We folded the skin over the body and I placed his hat on his face. We filled the grave half full of dirt, then put in a large log to keep wolves from disturbing the body. Several of us had light attacks of cholera, I among them.

Chuck Hinman: IJMA No. 195: The passing of the dining room

Sunday is Eating Day in Adair County, and this Sunday with CM is filled with Eating stories and columns - not by design, but by serendipity, the way the elves make things happen here. Robert Stone found this heretofore unposted in CM Chuck Hinman essay on a subject many can similar with: The Dining Room, that special place in the big old houses only used when the preacher came after Sunday services. It's Chuck Hinman's It's Just Me Again Column No. 195, a jewel. And it does fit nicely with Tom Chaney's review of the Gary P. West's Eating Your Way Across Kentucky.
The next earlier Chuck Hinman column is: Chuck Hinman, IJMA. Kinney, Nebraska lore

By Chuck Hinman

The passing of the dining room

How long has it been since you ate a meal in the dining room (yours or someone else's) where the table was set with the best dishes in the house, the crystal, silver, and linen napkin? I bet you would be surprised how many dining rooms in a classy city like Bartlesville, Oklahoma, are for show only and seldom put to their intended use when house plans were drawn. This is not to put a guilt-trip on anyone. It will draw attention to a happy time that is most certainly passing before our eyes.

Tom Chaney: R746, Re-Review of Eating Your Way . . .

Of Writers and Their Books: . First published in Hart County News-Herald 21 January 2007. This is an updated re-review of a book by Gary P. West, about a field in which Tom Chaney has unchallenged expertise: Eating. His editor, Robert Stone has updated information on some of the entries, including The Depot and adds a note that Cave City's superb steak house, The Oasis, is On Trend and is a True Oasis, to use a Sunday with CM euphenism. A Columbia note: The Circle R Restaurant, Columbia, KY, is reviewed in the book, but not in Tom Chaney's review of the book. He does review Sulphur Well's famous Country Ham Restaurant, now called The Lighthouse - EW
The next earlier Tom Chaney column, R745, A Philosopher surveys his country

By Tom Chaney

"Or what's a heaven for"

Gary P. West was ensconced at the Frankfort Book Fair last fall slogging his latest book. You may recall that his last book was a biography of legendary Kentucky basketball legend, King Kelly Coleman. To match Kentucky's passion for round ball, his latest deals with yet another Bluegrass obsession - eating.

Schuyler McGaha was an encourager to other singers, musicians

What a gentleman!, Shelbyville pastor writes

Reverend Garry Polston writes:
S.D. McGaha was an honorable man. He had many friends and fans who looked up to him. What a gentleman! I had so much respect for him and his quartet. When I was a small boy I used to listen to them on the radio every Sunday afternoon. I have heard them sing in person many times and had them in my church where I have been pastor. I never heard him speak an unkind word. He was an encourager to other singers and musicians. He will certainly be missed.
