Basketball: Fifth straight for No. 11 Lindsey Wilson men Blue Raiders top St. Catharine 86-80. CATHARINE, KY - The good times just keep rolling for the No. 11 Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team as it hit nine 3-pointers to shoot itself past St. Catharine, St. Catharine, KY 86-80 on Saturday in Lourdes Hall. Senior Chase Spreen scored a game-high 27 points and hit three 3-pointers and junior Kalen Kimberland and sophomore Chase Cox both finished with 16 points. Cox connected on four 3-pointers for the game. Kashiff Carr paced the Patriots with 26 points, Melo Smith scored 23 and Travis Wilkins added 22 points in the paint. Lindsey Wilson shot 49.1 percent from the field, outshooting the Patriots who shot 47.1 percent and just 25.0 percent from behind the arc. St. Catharine did use its size to post a 38-34 advantage on the glass. The first half played out just like Lindsey Wilson needed it to, keeping the pace slow to match up with the ultra-athletic Patriots. Spreen made the big shots in the half, including a four-point play early in the half and a baseline jumper at the buzzer to end the half with 14 points. The Blue Raiders needed his points as Carr was unstoppable for St. Catharine, tallying 15 points and four rebounds. Undersized and outmatched athletically, Lindsey Wilson used a motion offense to keep the Patriots off balance and find open shots to finish the half with three 3-pointers and also knock down 10-of-11 free throws. Lindsey Wilson led the game at the break 37-32 after Spreen's last-second shot. The story of the second half was a bevy of 3-pointers sent in by Lindsey Wilson. With St. Catharine putting all they had in the tank towards its man-to-man defense, Cox did his job of making it pay, knocking down three 3-pointers. Spreen also added a three in the half, helping the Blue Raiders stay up between seven to 10 points through the first 15 minutes of the half. The final five minutes were a different story as the Patriots got back into the game with their defense. Following a turnover by senior Justin Archie, St. Catharine capitalized with back-to-back baskets that it was fouled on, allowing it two straight three-point play chances to bring the deficit down to just three points, 73-70, with just under two minutes to play. The teams traded baskets on the next two possessions before Lindsey Wilson junior Charles Baker hit a huge 3-pointer to put the Blue Raiders up 78-72, then on a breakaway Baker put away a dunk that put Lindsey Wilson up 81-72 with 40 seconds to play.Smith hit a pair of 3-pointers for St. Catharine down the stretch, with the second making the Lindsey Wilson lead 83-78 with 19.1 seconds on the clock. Junior Darren Ballou was sent to the free-throw line after the three where he missed both, but the Patriots failed to convert with a turnover, forcing St. Catharine to foul Spreen and he connected on both shots to seal the win. -DAN WHITE This story was posted on 2012-01-22 05:43:50
