Larry Smith: Area has three incredible things going for it

"We've got three things going for us," he says.

Larry Smith has broken out of his own turtle mode and is uncharacteristically hyper this morning - hyper about the great global publicity which is benefitting South Central Kentucky right now."Can you believe it?" he asks. "First there was Dakota Meyer.

"Then The Turtle Man.

"And now Chase Spreens full court basketball shot. Links to the YouTube video are everywhere - on CBS, on CNN, the Courier Journal - you name it," Smith, the shy child of Summersville, Green County, Kentucky, whose now an international celebrity in his own right as the morning voice of The WAVE, 92.7 FM, said.

"Those three things - Dakota, the Turtle Man, and Chase Spreen - have really put us on the map."For the three or four dozen readers who haven't already seen the video and for those who make it a daily dose of inspiration now, here's the quick click link to it. Adair Co., KY History: When the Civil War turned, right here

A CM Must Read Post: Derek Coomer uncovers a letter which recounts a pivotal time in the Civil War, when, he writes, 'As many as 15,000 Union troops camped in and around Adair County during the weeks leading up to the battle, which would prove to be a crucial blow to Confederate forces in Kentucky and which would provide the North with its first major victory of the war.' The account includes an account of a visit to Todd's Cave, near Russell Creek north of Columbia, KY, more descriptive than even Thomas Wolfe could have penned. Each paragraph of the letter contains some new to most (it is to us) information about Adair County, including the delicious tidbit that Mrs. Todd was related to President Lincoln's wife.

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the battle of Mill Springs (which took place January 19, 1862) I thought I would pass along this fascinating letter I stumbled upon, written by a Union officer stationed in Adair County to his hometown newspaper, the Ripley Bee of Ripley, OH. The letter recounts a visit by a party of Union officers to Todd's Cave, led by Nathan Gaither Jr., an Adair County native who was then Kentucky Secretary of State and son-in-law of Governor Magoffin.

Site Comment: What the Editor would do

Why using a Free Resource - a Powerful Potent Capsule of Publicity, 4 lines of text in CM Events, should be the First Thing done. And why it may be the ONLY thing necessary to do to Pack Crowds at Events. A Disclaimer: CM works. CM Events are Free. But highly successful events are held frequently in this area without using CM. There are plenty of other games in town, as there must always be. -EW

By Ed Waggener

A close friend recently had surgery which required him to make a difficult decision. There were two difficult options. He told the doctor to just do what he would do if he, were the doctor in the same situation. The doctor then made the rational decision for the less costly procedure. My friend is very happy with the outcome.

Nobody has asked, but in hundreds of parallel situations, we'd like share what the Editor would do if faced with the need to promote an event: I'd write a concise announcement of the Event first and send it to ColumbiaMagazine.com. It's Free, and it works only because we insist on the most information packed into the least space. CM Events simply work.
