Rev. Harris comments on Halloween, Of Spooks and Saints

'I believe Halloween is inherently evil and is one of the great lies that Satan uses to blind the people of God.' -REV. LAURA HARRIS
Comments about Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Of Spooks and Saints

By Rev. Laura Harris
A Personal Commentary

Dear Brother Welsh, Thank you for sharing your views about Halloween. I appreciate your presentation and well-thought-out arguments. When I was young, I also participated in Halloween. When my children were young, I took them on limited trick or treats, but even then I was sensitive enough not to dress them as witches or anything evil.

Carol Perkins: Guy trusts his GPS

There's a very important moral in this story, a truth about the difference in frenetic city life with its terribly slow pace of actual fulfillment, put as only Carol Perkins can: 'On the way home the next day, I thought about how hectic city life is. At home, I zip to the grocery store, to the post office, to work, to a restaurant, or to my mother's in minutes. In the city, nothing takes minutes. I may not know road numbers, but I know where so and so lives and I know where to turn to get where I want to go. That's all the GPS I need. -CAROL PERKINS

By Carol Perkins

Guy trusts his GPS. "It has never been wrong." That is what he assured me when I doubted its wisdom when he programmed it to a location in downtown Nashville.

My plan was to arrive at eleven o'clock, and knowing it takes a little over two hours for the trip, I planned to leave around eight thirty. At seven, I was sipping my coffee while Guy was setting the GPS in my car.

Thanks to MellaDee and Beverly for being there for young people

Richard Raines writes:
How fitting that Mella Dee Allen and Beverly Rowe were on the field along with Kathy Hadley for presentation of plaque!! Mella Dee became a "mother hen" to hundreds of kids who came through the Adair Co Band program while (her husband) Tim was band director at Adair Co., and it wasn't (and still isn't often now that Tim is director of the LWC band) that if you see Mella Dee at a band function that you don't see her employee and friend Beverly close by. Thanks to both of them for being there for all those young people over the years!! - RICHARD RAINES

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Of Spooks and Saints

Another Angle, the occasional musings of a Kentucky Pastor: Of Spooks and Saints. first printed 30 October 2005 in the Hart County Herald
The next earlier Another Angle: Rev. Joey N. Welsh: An Important National Symbol

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

Halloween has never been one of my favorite times of the year. I have often thought that the store decorations featuring spooks, goblins, and candy, all coming to a finale at the end of October, robbed a lot of the energy from my favorite fall occasion a few scant weeks later, Thanksgiving Day. I have also wondered if the decor of the season sometimes encourages very small children to have unnecessary fears. I do admit that my childhood experiences with Halloween were fun, and I have nothing but happy memories of parties at school and trick-or-treating.

Poetry by Robert Stone: By faith the inner fetch

By faith the inner fetch
- a sonnet for the birthday of Terri Powell Haight
The hand and heart and mind create the sketch
which waits and wills to be at last at large
while watchers know by faith the inner fetch
of action powered by a holding charge.

The tree or lake or face will always change
for life is never fixed and slow decay
unheeding and unyielding shows its range
of steady work below the noisy fray.

The images now caught within the self
are all that will survive in later times
and fill the memory's memento shelf
with joys to soothe the coming lower climbs.

Another moment always is too late
to speak of caring and forget the hate.

- Robert Stone, 29 October 2011
