10th Re-enactment of Bank Robbery, 2011, the best yet

Green River Cowboys, Street Actors, Narrator Stanley Lawson Deliver Great Outdoor Theater, again. Whether it was a record crowd or not - that's still being thrashed out between impresario and exactician Charles Grimsley and Chief of Police Jason Cross. The chief is willing, in the tradition of and in tribute to the great Columbia Mayor Mayor Coy Downey to let practical hyperbole prevail. CM is calling it a record: it just feels like one needs to be pronounced. Above all, no one can argue that A good time was had by all.

Columbia Chief of Police Jason Cross is willing to call the crowd which saw the 2011 re-enactment of the April 29, 1872 robbery of the Bank of Columbia, a record crowd. But Charles Grimsley, who has counted the crowds since the first re-enactment, initially was unwilling to say that spectators exceeded the 850-1,000 at the October 9, 2010 re-enactment, according to Chief Cross.

JIM: Fractious fowl of Big Elm very unlike peaceful Big Chicken

Just 90 short years ago, the Big Elm community was beset by bird which wanted to fight all the time. But, back in those days, we hear tales of grown men dressing up in their Sunday best, looking up a worthy opponent, and, after a polite knock, announce that he had come asking to fight the host. Times have changed. -CM

By Jim

Obviously, the peaceful gallus domesticus giganticus seen around the Square here of late is no relation to the winged critter reported by the Big Elm correspondent in the spring of 1921:

Mr. Milton Hughes caught a fowl of some sort last Sunday, in his field, about the size of a small hen. It was of a dark blue color, beak like a hen, feet like a duck, legs like a crane and eyes as red as a terrapin, and wants to fight all the time. The oldest inhabitants never saw anything like it.

Researched and edited by Jim, who is well versed in these matters. -CM

Wookie will be on Puppy Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday 20112

An Adair County Dog makes the National Big Time

By Peg Schaeffer
News from Sugar Farms Rescue

Every year on Super Bowl Sunday, Animal Planet has the Puppy Bowl. One of our puppies, Wookie, has been chosen to be one of the players. He has been adopted and his new owner will be taking him to New York on October 19, 2011, for the filming. Way to go Wookie! -Peg

Note: As most everyone knows, Puppy Bowl is a Major Tv Event which features Puppies from shelters, such as Adair County's Sugarfoot Farms Rescue. "Super Bowl" is apparently some kind of big football game: ( Super Bowl/Wikipedia, at least after morning services and well before the BTU or Christian Endeavor starts.

Melewi theorizes on Big Chicken phenomenon

Warns it could end up feeding a lot of people chicken 'n dumplins

By Melewi

I believe this chicken may have gotton lost and it belongs to Jeanne Marshburn.

Or, it could belong to Kathy Hunt. She was missing one the other day.

They both love their chickens.

I would hate to have to build a roost for that chicken, or a chicken coop.

It would make a large pot of dumplin's, so it had better watch out hanging around town. It may end up in a pot. - Melewi

Trish Jackson: Is there an Animal Takeover in our town?

She believes Big Chicken, Creature of the Night from a time back in front of Grimsley's Jewelry, are somehow interrelated. Inquiry of relevance to science and Varmintological and Homeland Security Research because of Octoberish weather, Halloween coming on, and the fact that many or two law agencies here are well trained in the use of night observation equipment, but haven't had the opportunity to put it to real good use after going to Washington, DC. to get training on it. -CM
