Sale of Molasses honors memory of Mitch Harris

'I thought this would be one way to honor my Dad, who was my biggest Hero,' JOHN HARRIS

John Harris writes:
Ed, I am carrying on a tradition that my Dad, Mitchell Harris, did every Fall. He would have Molasses for sale at Harris Barber Shop and Town Barber Shop starting in mid-September

The Molasses have arrived and can be purchased in pints and quarts. I wasn't going to do this, but the public kept asking if they were going to be for sale this fall. I thought this would be one way to honor my Dad, who was my biggest Hero. Thank you - John Harris
Mitch Harris was a member of a prominent Adair County family, a member of the Free Union Separate Baptist Church, and a Separate Baptist Minister for over 40 years in Adair and Russell Counties. He was a barber in Columbia for approximately 50 years. He served 11 years on the Westlake Regional Hospital Board of Directors serving 6 years as chairman. He died June 10, 2011.

The following item appeared in the Adair County News almost 112 years ago and is presented as found, verbatim, without comment. I leave it to the Great Minds of Adair County (TM) to parse the words and ponder the meaning and veracity thereof.

Mr. Frank Cochran, of the firm Cochran & Daisy, Lebanon, told us yesterday that he had a friend in his city who came by his office each week to read The News, stating that he wanted to see who had gone to heaven from Adair County since the former issue.

Outstanding event put on by Green County for Dakota Meyer

Writer encourages everyone to come to the October 2, 2011 event at Blue Raider Stadium when it's Columbia/Adair's turn to honor most famous native son

By Victoria Pike

What a wonderful ceremony in Greensburg for Dakota Meyer, Saturday.

I attended and was very impressed. Governor Steve Beshear, Senate President David Williams, Senator Mitch MCConnell, Brett Guthrie, and David Given were in attendance.

I hope everyone will come out to Blue Raider Stadium, 820 Hanley Lane, Columbia, KY, October 2, 2011 for the Columbia event to honor Dakota Meyer.

After seeing 60 minutes last night, I now have an even better understanding of exactly what happened on that terrible night in September of 2009.

He is truly a remarkable young man to have lived through such a terrible ordeal. We all need to go out and show our appreciation to this humble young man for all that he has done for this country.

Thanks you so much to all those on the committee planning this most special event. -Victoria Pike

Blue Raider: black lab mix puppy hanging out at The Pines

Hope to place it with good Forever Home; would call pound as last resort

Mr. Waggener,

A small puppy showed up here at the golf course this weekend and has continued to hang around. It looks like a lab mix, black, female. She is extremely healthy and playful. We would love for it to go to a good home, and if we can't place it by posting it to your magazine, we would call the pound as a last resort. Would you be so kind as to put it on your site?

Thanks for your help,

James England

We have had an outstanding season to date and we are just now starting to play our best golf which is very exciting. You want to be playing your best when it means the most and that is what we are doing as a team. We are becoming a very tough team to beat. -COACH BURTON.

A reminder on First Things, First, keeping a Free Service Free

Thanks to everyone, especially those people who regularly send material to post, for remembering to always send Events or Yard Sales in ONE EMAIL.

This is especially necessary in the case of followups on omissions. The delivery of an announcement package for Events with an if-commercial value of $40 - $60, $100 -$200 or more is predicated on being able to post from ONE EMAIL or Yard Sale Posts valued at $9 up, if charged but are Free when they meet CM policy standards.

A critical part of any free Event or Yard Sale posts is Street and Number for Venues. That's our tradeoff: Otherwise, it's an ad. -ED

Link to follow-up NPR Segment on Majestic Yachts

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I love NPRs shows and news- it's mostly what I listen to except a hodgepodge of national evening news shows, and 60 Minutes. Of those I sent links to, I'm especially a fan of Morning Edition, (they did a follow-up story from a 2009 report on Majestic Yachts recently). Then, I was living in Oakland, CA, and just about spit up my coffee when I heard that first story come on! I also LOVE "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!!" which can be heard in whole or in segments online by Googling, or through the NPR website.

Here's a link to the follow-up story on Majestic Yachts, in case you didn't catch it: Majestic Yachts followup on NPR

Larry Smith: The Greensburg turnout for Dakota was unbelievable

What a tribute to Green County High School's most famous graduate, Dakota Meyer

For once, Larry Smith can't find words enough to describe the spectacular turnout in Greensburg, KY, on Saturday, September 17, 2011 for Green County High graduate Dakota Meyer.

"Greensburg officials had expected a monster crowd of up to 8,000. The actual number, they now claim is 15,000," he said in a call to CM at 6:28amCT, Monday morning, September 19, 2011. "And get this - Tv stations are estimating a turnout of 20,000! That's double the population of Green County!"

"I've never in my life seen a gathering like this one! I was never prouder of Green County than I was on Saturday."

Smith, the Operations Manager for Shoreline Communications - The Wave 92.7 and The Big Dawg 99.9 - and one of the area's outstanding photographers, had intended to get photos to share. It was almost impossible, he said, "There was a sea of people."

Letter: Holding Dakota Meyer in his continuing prayers

'He deserves not only our respect, but he needs our prayers' - BOBBIE SEXTON
Bobbie Sexton writes:
As a retiree of the US Military I am extremely proud of SGT Meyer. He is now among a very elite group of men. He has my respect, my concern and my prayers.

Time will help some with memories of actions he has experirenced. He will reach the point where he isn't tempted to scream, "hit the deck," at certain sounds. Some of the places and the people he has known will fade. Not so the ones he lost. They will return in dreams and when he lies sleepless in the night. It's the eyes. The eyes will haunt him forever, I think.

SGT Meyer deserves not only our respect, but he needs our prayers. --Bobbie Sexton

Robert Stone Poetry: Upsettling settled ways, a sonnet

Upsetting settled ways
-a sonnet for Chambers Stevens
Degree, diploma, finished study say
yet then what course to follow is less clear.
One chooses stay at home or go away,
the comforts known or chance to pioneer.

Proposals, projects, dreams untried proclaim
but then demand upsetting settled ways.
One urges shameful myths be set aflame,
unfounded fears become consoling gaze.

Success, acclaim, a distant stage is seen
and then exploring all the world is need.
One learns and teaches wheat from chaff to glean,
prepared at last with confidence to speed.

Ambition, dripping blessings oils anoint,
both hesitates and hurries pass each point.

- Robert Stone, 18 September 2011

Peg Schaeffer: CBS Video shows difference pet photos make

Comments re article 46994: BJ Fudge says CM policy on Animal Adoption vindicated by CBSPeg Schaeffer writes:
Just watched the program and couldn't get over what a difference in the dogs' pictures. My biggest problem taking pictures is the delay in the digital cameras. Seems like I might have the greatest picture, but by the time it clicks the Kodak moment is gone. - Peg Schaeffer
Thanks. We think you are doing great, as the accompanying photo of Vinnie illustrates and which the photo sent by sisters Marsha Walker/Vicki Miller epitomizes (Precious Puppies). Of course, we can all learn together how to get those friendly dog photos which will get the animals into good Forever Homes: those photos which mirror the bond between the dog - which tends to love humans more than its own kind - and its keeper/photographer. You don't have to be a genius to see that relationship in the animals' eyes. In fact, one day forensics may use animal photographs to support animal mistreatment cases. You can look in the pet's eyes and see whether the photo was taken by one who loved the animal or not. Together, using good photography, we can make 100% adoption a reality. -ED WAGGENER
