When there was no chase, the boys went back and did it again

By Phil Burris

I don't know where this ranks, but Glenn Staples and I did a pretty good job sweeping the Square. We were in the blue 66 Dodge Hemi of Columbia fame.

Sweeping the square: A record ? 3-Car Synchronized Sweep

An eyewitness account of a Rite of Passage, of what may go into the World Record Book of Guinnesses as the only three car abreast Synchronized Sweep of the Public Square. It happened in the roaring Thunder Road Days of Fifty Years ago, when the City of Columbia benefitted from a Police Academy not funded at taxpayer expense: The town council just hired the worst driving offender to be the next policeman. It happened that way, growing up in the sleepy, peaceful little town of Columbia, KY, with an All-Time All Star Cast of Characters. -CM

My good friend Bobby Janes was driving his mother's red Chevrolet station wagon; I was riding with him.

Eddie Shively, who was driving his Chevy Convertible on the inside lane.
