Signage up on new Lindsey Residence Halll

2011-08-08 - Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
McCandless Hall: The sign is up on Lindsey Wilson College's newest residence hall, new landscaping is in place, and all is ready for the influx of students at the new building, according to Jimmy Bottoms, who supervised the just completed project. The women's dormitory, conveniently located near the library, will have 150 beds. All is calm and beautiful in readiness for the opening day, August 18, 2011, when the expected 1,100 resident students plus drive-in students will make the City of Columbia bustle. At least one local business man said that Lindsey Wilson students and staff can account for 40% of his business when school is in session.

The Ghia would fly! Chicago to Columbia in 6 hrs. flat!

Jimmy W. Harper has one for the World Record Book of Guinnesses: Beats Willie M's time by 15 minutes! If you can't take his word for it, ask Richie Janes if the 1963 Karmann Ghia VW could fly!

Jimmy W. Harper writes:
I too would like to get in the record book on time from Chicago to Columbia, also in 1965, in a record time of 6 hours and 0 minutes.

Clocked out from my job at Young Spring and Wire on 65th Street at 1:00 am and pulled into the Shell station on top of Jamestown Hill (where Nissan is now) at 7:00 am to drink a 6 ounce Coke. (Chicago and Columbia on same time)

I was by myself in a 1963 Karmann Ghia VW. This is not Ripley's Believe it or Not. But ask Richie Janes if the Ghia VW could fly. Thanks for posting this on CM. - Jimmy W Harper

Where is a leather repair shop?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I have a question for CM readers. Where can I find a leather repair shop? I have a purse that needs restitching - it's only an inch or so but I can't use it unless I have it repaired.

Since most local business choose not to list themselves in the yellow pages of the phone book it's hard to find the services you need. And NO not "everybody knows where they are". Could Columbia Magazine start a business listing service? I know the business that are on the ball already advertise with you but maybe a small list of business with addresses and phone numbers.

It might help keep some of our money in the local area.

From the Farm

Time needed for Record Book: Chicago to Sweep of the Square

Just for history and for entry into the World Record Book of Guinnesses, and not for emulation, CM needs to help establish just what the record for getting from Clearing or any other Adair County enclave in Chicago, to Sweeping the Square in Columbia, KY was in Thunder Road Days.

Somehow, today's time seems conservative. Names - where Statutes of Limitation - have run out, car, engine, driver, Sterling consumption, and accomplices, road conditions, and anecdotes such as those about eluding the police in Whiteland, or outsmarting the State Police would be welcome. Motorcycle times are welcome, too.

And if there is a consistent best driver of the day, send that as well. Submissions welcome at: Contact/Submit

CM Birthdays popular with readers - and easy to post

If you'd like to let readers know about the milestones in your family, maybe you'd like to share your family's happy moments through the birthdays.

It's easy. We like to receive copy for birthdays for whatever the current two months are, right now, August and September in this style:
Happy Birthday, Mary Adair, (include Birthday with Month and Day)
Or
Happy Birthday, Mary Adair (include Birthday with Month and Day and YEAR of Birth if you want to let readers know age)
Send as many birthdays, one right under the other, as you wish, if they are in the format above.

We prefer only Birthdays, or only anniversaries, or only In Memory Birthays in each email.

Any more information or a different format can slow posting; or, if information is personal message, it may need to be paid advertising..

From the prestigious list of names in the Birthdays column today, it would appear we've gotten a lot of the birthdays for today. But if not, send them using any Contact/Submit and we'll post, as processing capacity permits. (Remember to include complete contact information, not for posting, but let us call if need be: Full name, telephone number, email. In the body of the e-mail, please.) -CM
