Poetry by Robert Stone: I have, I will

I have, I will- a sonnet for Eoghan
I make myself the better when I seek
to help another claim tomorrow's dream.
The gladness comes when words of trust we speak.
And I have faith. And I will see faith gleam.

I forge my own advantage when I aim
to not ignore the needs of those around.
The joy arrives when future goals we name.
And I have hope. And I will hear hope sound.

I build my best safekeeping when I crave
well-being of the least as well as great.
The comfort stays when daily touch we save.
And I have love. And I will feel love wait.

Two kinds of memories deter within:
the things that were and those that might have been.

- Robert Stone, 7 August 2011

These refrains of the same song are sung daily in The Bookstore. Usually the singer is the bored spouse of a book customer. The reader has drug the non-reader in by the ear. And the singer speaks with pride about his (or her) lack of interest in reading.

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

Proverbs 25:11 tells us that, "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver." That brief verse says a lot about the beauty of the right word spoken in the right way at the right time. The image that comes to my mind when I read that verse, which speaks of language as an attractive depiction, also reminds me that a skillfully composed picture can be quite stunning and meaningful.

It's August 1932 in Gage County, Nebraska. We are 60 miles south of Lincoln -- Big Red country! There is no end in sight for the awful depression or the drought. The wheat harvest did little more than pay the interest on the farm loan on our 160 acre farm. Dad was trying to pay off his sister's (Auntie Grace's) equity but wasn't making much headway.

100 Years ago: Great revivals were being held in Adair Co., KY

Revivals were in full swing in Adair County in 1911. At Tabor, Rev. B.M. Currie, Methodist, closed a meeting with 25 conversions and 14 additions to the church; meanwhile, over in Cane Valley, Eld. Z. T. Wiilliams and Eld. W.B. Taylor topped that number of conversions with 26.

Religion, education, the Pea Ridge Fair, and an elderly terrapin dominated the front page of the News 100 years ago this week.

In a Lake Woebegon-ish moment came the announcement that the four ministers of Columbia were gentlemen all, each "far above the average intellectually," and that their respective flocks as well as the community at large were pleased with the work they did. The thrust of the announcement, however, couched though it were in the kindest of terms and a bit of self-effacement, was that the News' policy was "not to publish extended notices of the discourses of the local ministry." Further stated the article, "Fulsome flattery is not relished by strong minded men, neither do intellectual women look upon it as sweet morsel."
