Dave Rosenbaum writes:
Thanks for the great material on duels, raids and other interesting stuff in Adair County's past. I recently downloaded a Kentucky history book from Google Free Books. It is A History of Kentucky by William B. Allen, published in 1872. It has a considerable amount of information on Southcentral Kentucky including Chapter 11, "History of Kentucky more Particularly Relating to Green County>" It's an interesting read and should be informative to your Milltown area readers and those in Green County. - Dave Rosenbaum
Thanks, Dave Rosenbaum. And to readers, here's a link to the the Google page with information about this download: A History of Kentucky by William B. Allen

Two houses where Morgan's Raiders spent the night still standing

Old Coddger writes:
A side note on Gen Morgans stay in the metropolis of Cane Valley is that the Bridgewater House where Morgan spent the night and one other where some of his officers also stayed are still standing today.

The Bridgewater house is owned by some of the Bridgewater relatives and the other is where my mother still lives.

Poetry by Robert Stone: A choice one makes

A choice one makes
-a sonnet inspired by Milan Kundera's Identity and for cEc
To be unhappy is the choice one makes
when being happy is ignored to seek
more power to ambush high ambition's stakes,
neglectful of the heart in valley bleak.

But having such a choice is freedom's root,
what constitutes its never dimming glow
maintaining strength though shadows in pursuit
on present hope cast doubts from long ago.

To melt one's individuality
into the cauldron of the multitude
will smooth identity so all agree
and dull the selfish wants till all subdued.

Defeat, euphoria? which will you seize?
Which way of living choose in times like these?

-Robert Stone, 4 July 2011

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag

The story about the duel ( Jim's account from an early newspaper) written by P.H. Bridgewater of Cane Valley, has a connection to Civil War happenings on July 4, 1863. Bridgewater was a friend of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and it was in his house that Morgan stayed when he made the infamous longest raid and had some problems getting across Tebbs Bend in Taylor County

Connie Kemp identifies location of Queen Annes Lace plant

Click to full size picture with details

Joyce Coomer of Printing Creations, who submitted the tough photo puzzler of the Queen Anne's Lace growing up through asphalt pavement, sends hearty congratulations to Connie Kemp for being so observant.

The plant picture was taken in the parking lot behind Glamourette Beauty Shop, less than one block from the Adair Annex.

The plant was truly hiding in plain view. Several people have sent answers to the mystery of the location of the Queen Anne's Lace photo. The complete list of answers is below, in reverse order of receipt.

  • WINNER: Connie Kemp (2011-07-01/11:01): "I believe this is located in the parking lot behind Glamourette Beauty Shop."
  • David Coomer (2011-06-30/9:43pmCT) "How about between the Baptist Church and Marshall Loy's office?"
  • Jennifer Carter (2011-06-30/2:35pmCT):" I say the plant is behind Walker Realty in the parking lot that Bank employees utilize."
  • Sheila Hare (2011-06-30/1:36pmCT: "Is this behind the office of Richard Lee Walkers Office. Or the strip of offices that his office is around behind the building? This is my guess."
  • Martha Lacy (2011-06-30/12pmCT) "I think it is beside Dr. Browns office in the parking lot where she and her employees park"
  • Joyce Turner (2011-06-30/11:19am): "Beside the eldercare building on Reed Street."
  • Doris Hovious (2011-06-30/8:37amCT): "I think it is the parking lot of the Columbia Baptist Church."
  • Johnnietta Jessie (2011-06-30/7:24amCT) "Behind the old library; next to the building which was built behind it." We think this might be describing Jefferson Alley. Maybe the Coomer Building, Loy Law office, or Moore's Pool Room
  • Lance Bean (2011-06-30/5:45amCT) "Reed St."
  • Anonymous (2011-06-30/2:49amCT): "By the VFW Building by the fairgrounds."
  • Steve Hovious (2011-06-29/11:06pmCT): "It looks like the VFW Building."
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Mystery Photo game.

Just wanted to thank Ed for his help in listing my ad for a building for the 127 sale. Got one shortly after listing posted. Thanks so much Ed. --Tamara Andrew
Thanks, Tamara. We really appreciate both the thank you and the help keeping Yard Sales current and up to date. A reminder to everyone else: The US 127 Yard sale is a huge affair, even if it were just limited to just our nearby counties of Russell, Casey, and Clinton Counties in Kentucky. It's much bigger. It stretches from Gadsden, Alabama to Hudson Michigan. Local exhibitors from Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Casey, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties are invited to let CM readers know about their US 127 locations (we'll need a Street & Number to list free). My female tabby cat is missing after a neighbor's Friday night fireworks on Tutt Street. She could have gone away from the noise and may have run toward Gate/Chevron, possibly. Crime: Crop mayhem may have been work of band of raccoons - or a grundoon

List of suspects widened to include groundhog or drove of groundhogs. Both employ same MO, riding stalks down to get ears of corn. (CM desperately needs picture of groundhogs caught in the act. Our personal War with the Grundoons is decades old. They are such liars. -EW)

Lance Bean writes:
It very much looks like the corn patch has been hit by a band of raccoons or could be a groundhog because both animals will ride the stalks down to get to ears of corn. - Lance Bean
