Wants Joe Johnson name back in its rightful place

ROGER D. SMITH DMD writes:
Ed-- I can't think of any single person in our community who is as honorable, unassuming, and dedicated to a single cause (the young people of our county) than Mr. Joe Johnson. I have never heard this man boast or position himself for praise for any of his countless hours doing his version of community service. Surely, his name can go back to its rightful place.-ROGER D. Thinks park should remain Joe Johnson Little League Park

Jimmy W. Harper writes:
I remember playing on the team Rotary with J.C. Johnson, Joe Johnson's son. That was when there were only four teams and everyone did not get to play. Mr. Johnson tried to pick the best or the one who had a little talent (I only had a little talent and played right field when a poor batter was up) but I got to play. Joe Johnson will always be remembered by me and every player on those first teams. I think that the name of the Little League Park should remain as The Joe Johnson Little League Park and not try to be politically correct. -Jimmy W. Harper

Joe Hare speaks out for keeping Joe Johnson name for LL Park

Mr Johnson gave a big part of his life to the youth of Adair County
Comments re article 44794 Reader asks about name change on Little League Park

By Joe Hare
Guest Commentary

I was involved with the Little League Baseball program when it was moved from the old Fairgrounds field to the new facility where it is at today. Mr Johnson gave a big part of his life to the youth of Adair County and as a member of the board after it had moved to its present location, we (the board) felt it only fitting that Mr. Joe Johnson be honored by having the park named after him.

Reader writes of Columbia, KY in different light - not quite so perfect

Amy Martin writes:
There are terrible crimes here. There are murders - one of the most successful businessmen of Adair County was murdered just a couple of years ago, remember? Drug crimes are excessive. Along with that, we have a high rate of poverty with hardly any jobs here. A high teen pregnancy rate. I agree that Columbia, being the lifeless town that it is, is better than most urban areas, but it definitely has its downfalls. -Amy Martin

Reader asks about name change on Little League Park

JC Johnson writes:
Would like to know why the sign going into the JOE JOHNSON little league park was changed to Adair County Little Park this seems to be doing injustice to a man who worked his whole life building the park so we would have a place for our youth to play baseball and softball. He only spent 53 years of his life working with the youth in Adair County. Thanks. - JC Johnson
NOTE: This article previously linked to the agenda for the P&R Board's upcoming meeting. However, the P&R Board is not involved with the Little League Park's naming. --Pen
