Our first Sandhill Cranes: A fantastic sight

Click on headline for story plus photo(s)

By Barbara Armitage
The thing I like best about participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count is the synergy that it creates. I get as excited when my friends spot new birds as I do when I see a bird for the first time. Thanks to a good friend I had the chance to experience both Monday, February 21, 2011.

Wayne and I were just returning from bird watching out near Green River Lake when Lucille Lemmon called and said "you have to come see the Sandhill Cranes"! She had just turned off Hwy 206 on her way home and there they were feeding in a corn field. As close as we can guess there were about 200 birds in the flock.

KDA thistle spraying program available in Adair Co., KY

By Nick Roy
Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture is sponsoring a Thistle Spraying Program in Adair County to assist in control of thistles on Adair County farms. Thistles are considered a noxious weed in Kentucky.

Here's the deal:

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture will supply a sprayer and 10 quarts of 2,4-D herbicide. The landowner must provide a tractor and the water. Landowners may spray up to 20 acres but must provide the additional herbicide. Spraying is scheduled for April 11 and 12, 2011. Due to the timing, 2 quarts of 2,4-D per acre should be applied for maximum control.

First come, first served basis

This program is on a first-come, first serve basis. A limited number of farms will be able to be sprayed this year. For more information and to sign up, contact the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service at 409 Fairground ST, Columbia, KY, or call (270) 384-2317.

Link: On NYT story on proposal to subsidize rural broadband

Mary Keltner of Gradyville, KY, sends an interesting link on a story in the New York Times about a proposal before the Federal Communications Commision to have the Federal Government cease subsidizing rural telephone service and instead subsidize rural broadband service.

In Adair County, many, because of locations of their businesses and homes, have woefully slow DSL or dial up services.

A Blast for the Past brings back memories of war talk

Linda Waggener writes:
Really enjoy Shamarie Claiborne's photos and her writing! Hope she's writing a book. Reading this article gave me the gift of a clear picture of the little girl traveling the halls of our place of higher education, overhearing adult conversations and not being able to avoid those fears of childhood. I wonder if our children and grandchildren are hearing all the negative news of this day and creating escape plans in their own minds?

One of my favorite memories of a child's views of wartime was that of my sister-in-law Jean Cravens standing at the side of her father, E. P. Waggener, as he and neighbor Ralph Willis talked in hushed tones about the rolling local blackouts in WWII. Conversations shared and/or observed about war make for some serious growing-up. -Linda Waggener
