Birds of Kentucky: The Sandhill Cranes gargling overhead

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

You can hardly go outside for more than a few minutes without hearing the gargle of Sandhill Cranes. They are for the most part flying higher today than yesterday and are hard to find. I saw one flock of migrants yesterday of more than 150.

I'm wondering if anyone has heard the honk of Canada Geese or seen one low enough this year to know if it was a goose?

JIM: When a Dalmatian was de facto Mayor of The Sprangs

When Jim read the story about the fire at Green River Marina, it brought to mind the memory of a great dog and of the story of the Columbia Fire Company and Chemical Fire Truck, 1921. This story deals with divers things, under two topics: 1) Old Paleface and 2) When, in 1922, Columbia heeded the editorial call to 'Buy a fire apparatus.' and the community responded just as it does, today, when Ralph Roy Speaks in Columbia's most influential print journal, It's Just for a Smile News.

By "Jim"

It's rare that I come across a fire-related story that Old Paleface, a venerated Dalmatian of great repute in Russell Springs, doesn't come to mind. Paleface nominally belonged to a Mr. Bernard of that village, but anyone who had been around th' Sprangs for longer than a buck-fifty knew The Truth -- that Old Paleface was the de facto Mayor and Goodwill Ambassador as well as the Foot Patrol Officer, General Town Inspector, and Food Taster Extraordinaire.

Looking Back Sat., 1 year ago: It was mostly about THE Band

There were 30 photos posted on Saturday, November 28, 2009. Great Wooded South - Smartest Inventions

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

Just a note to let all you folks with inquiring minds know that the research staff in the Great Wooded South is making great strides attempting to explain hugely difficult happenings. The research is yet incomplete but nevertheless is gaining momentum in spite of massive budget cuts from federal and state government sources. As of late many researchers are continuing their important work at little or no salary and are relying upon friends, neighbors and family to keep going.

VFW Post 6097 is remembering Adair soldiers overseas

They've prepared packages for five local servicemen. If you'd like to help with the project, directions are below

By Cathy Luttrell
News from VFW Post 6097 and VFW Auxiliary

As the citizens of Adair County are gathering for the holidays, many of them are thinking of a son, daughter or other family member who is not able to be with them this year. They are currently serving as members of our Armed Forces. Many are at bases or posts through out the United States and overseas. For some overseas, the holiday season will be just like any other day. There will be no Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas tree. They will wait in anticipation for a letter or package from home.
