Sailors in hometown drove cars with glasspacks

About: More on light noise pollution

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I remember the days of glass packs and stripped down cars.

I grew up in a Navy town and a lot of the sailors stripped down their cars and only had gray primer on the outside.

They took the outside door handles off and had to reach inside to open the doors.

They rode them real low to the ground and they looked real sharp.

Their glass packs were so loud. We could hear my sister's boy friend turn on our road 1/4 mile away and we - my two sisters and me - loved it.

My Daddy hated it, something about that car would mess up the radio and TV.

Spicy tidbits of all sorts -- a heart breaking elopement, new telephone lines, an up-to-date dinner, jubilation at the announcement of a native son, singings, spellings, protracted meetings, and a very black eye, among other things -- filled the community newsletters of the September 21, 1910 Adair County News.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh:
Historic Anniversaries, Unfinished Agendas. Part II

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor.HISTORIC ANNIVERSARIES AND UNFINISHED AGENDAS - Part II

HISTORIC ANNIVERSARIES AND UNFINISHED AGENDAS - Part I

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

Last week's column dealt with the unfinished agendas that are crystallized by three recent anniversaries: the September 11 attacks in 2001; the death of South African activist Steven Biko on September 12, 1977; the September 15, 1963 church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. September 17, 2010 marked 148 years since the 1862 battle on Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. That battle anniversary serves to remind us of the continuing echoes of the Civil War, some of them symbolic and some of them all too tragically real.

Poetry by Robert Stone: The Unknown a sonnet for myself

The unknown
- a sonnet for myself
The wise man sees the unknown in his way
and asks if good or harm will come therefrom.
The fool rejoices drunk at life's buffet
and disregards the down of jester's thumb.

The confident decides to take the best
and leaves behind unquestioned what remains.
The needy waits to hear his thoughts expressed
and frets against the silence fate maintains.

The flourishing use past to guide the now
and seize the opportunities at hand.
The floundering the present disallow
and mesmerized by doubt let doubt expand.

If what we meet would speak its special truth,
but wait, mine only hear both aged and youth.

- Robert Stone, 19 September 2010

The Homecoming Reunion:

Will we ever grow tired of hearing accounts of the greatest weekend in the history of our sleepy little town? Every store I enter, I stand in an aisle, talking to someone about the weekend, and listening to praise after praise of the events and of the fun they all had. I don't think I stopped smiling until I crashed late Sunday night.

The Plague of 1918

The Plague of 1918

For several years we kept a permanent search on an internet auction site for Horse Cave items. Some real treasures have come our way.

One of the most interesting was a packet of letters written by a merchant of this place to his daughter off in college in the fall of 1918. For the most part the letters relay information about family and about folks she would have known in the town. Generally he wrote in the late afternoon -- always in a rush to get the letter to the post office. Occasionally he was too late for the post office and had to carry the letter to the railroad depot to get it on the last train. Those letters carried the postmark "RPO" for Railway Post Office -- sorted and cancelled on the train.

A Kindred Spirit: How To Cure A Bad Mood

Hold a baby in your arms, writer says

By Teresa Bell Kindred

Have you ever had one of those mornings where nothing seems to go right? One day this week every time I tried to do something it went wrong. As the day wore on my mood soured. All I could think about was getting home, closing my door and telling the world to go away.

I had one more stop to make after work and then I could go home. I found the house where a former student of mine lived and rang the door bell. She answered the door with a smile and asked me to come inside. In her arms was her baby girl who is only about four months old.

Columbia resident wants to know how to get some sleep in Columbia. Move to country?
Comment on: Dave Rosenbaum recalls: Days of State Police vs. Glass Pack Mufflers

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Thanks Dave for your comments. I remember State Policeman Ed Hadley flagging me down on the square and telling me that the glasspack muffler on my 1966 Mustang was getting a little loud.

I thought about inviting him over to my house to hear the "crouchrocket" bikes fly by my house and the late night shotgunners on Tuesday nights who forget they are supposed to stop at dark. How does a body get to sleep? Move to the country?
