Prevent and/or recover from falls; workshop is Sept. 23, 2010 Health care providers, EMS and home caregivers invited to join council member for non-profit workshop focusing on the dangers of, and prevention/recovery from, falling, the leading cause of fatal injuries for ages 65 and older. A non-profit group, Body Recall, has been invited to provide a training workshop in Columbia at the Adair County Courthouse Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY on Thursday, September 23, 2010, at 3:30pmCT, on how to prevent and recover from falls. Body Recall, a 30-year-old organization founded in Berea, Kentucky, will do the training. It is a group with a mission to help adults and special-needs individuals with motion improvement exercises, adding to their ability to live at home. "This is an effort to act locally to raise awareness of preventive measures that can keep people safe and living in their own homes as long as possible," said Columbia city council member Linda Waggener. "In the September 23 workshop, participants will learn how to prevent falls and how to recover from them." The workshop will address issues associated with falls and fall prevention among older and special needs populations, simple exercises to prevent or reduce the severity of falls and fall-related injuries. Participants will also receive effective techniques for rising form a fall and learn ways to enhance and maximize recovery and take home a DVD. Falls are the leading cause of fatal injuries for Americans 65 and older. More than 18,000 older Americans die every year because of a fall, and the rate has risen dramatically over the last 10 years. "When older adults fall, it often leads to a loss of independence, reduced mobility, and earlier admission to a nursing home," said Lynn Beattie, Vice President of Injury Prevention with the National Council on Aging, and national director of the Falls Free Coalition(TM). "But the good news is, through appropriate risk management, falls are preventable." The Columbia workshop is scheduled for Thursday, September 23, 2010, 2010, from 3:30pm to 5pmCT in the Adair County Courthouse Annex lower level (accessible by elevator), 424 Public Square, Columbia, Kentucky. The cost of $49 (payable to Body Recall) takes care of expenses for the organization and includes a DVD on fall recovery.
