Insects of Kentucky: Eastern Tailed Blue butterfly, white clover

2010-07-03 - Photo by Derek Coomer. Lampton Lane, Adair Co., KY
The Eastern Tailed Blue butterfly is relatively small, about 1" in wingspan, but is a delightful summer sight in Adair County. The deeper blue color is indicative of a male of the species. He posted the picture at ColumbiaMagazine.com Group at Flickr. For more on this buttefly, and a particularly interesting symbiotic relationship it has with ants, click on Wikipedia: Eastern Tailed Blue
