Poetry by Robert Stone:
Senses, a sonnet

Poetry by Robert Stone:
Senses, a sonnet
Senses
- a sonnet by Robert Stone
No happy medium will satisfy
when poverty or plenty is success.
Who sees too much may overwhelm the eye
and see too little what can truly bless.

Who hears too much may puzzle fill the ear
and hear too little what will problems solve.
Who tastes too much may palate never clear
and taste too little what might sweet evolve.

Who feels too much may fear the surface new
and feel too little what could bring great joy.
Who smells too much may grow bewildered lost
and smell too little what should truth employ.

The satiated, blind to appetites,
can only see their pleasures as their rights.
- Robert Stone, 16 May 2010

100 Years Ago: In May 1910, focus was on Halley's Comet

(Written in memory of Effie Sandusky Heskamp 1910-2009. "Born, to the wife of Charley Sandusky, May 17, a daughter." - Adair County News, May 25, 1910.) -JIM

By Jim

One hundred years ago this week, the eyes of Adair County and the world were heavenward cast both in wonderment and dread anticipation as Halley's comet made its closest approach to earth. In September, 1909, the News had stated that "Astronomers tell us that this great flaming star will, when at its full glory next May, cover 100 degrees of celestial territory and will stand out like a great living thing of fire,"and in mid-April, 1910, came the report that "It will be the most superb sight that our generation has seen in the heavens."

But there were also dire predictions.

Some scientists believed that when - if - the earth passed through the tail of the comet on May 18th, "we may be soaked with deluge or rain during our comet bath."

Others stated that dry conditions would precede the comet's approach, but the Ono correspondent in May 4 News deftly batted that one aside, wryly commenting that the "much dreaded drouth (sic) that the astronomer predicted would be until after Halley's comet passed in May, has proven to be very damp and cool."

Another scientist, a Dutchman, prognosticated that the comet's tail "is made up of cathode rays, which, touching our atmosphere, would become X-rays of great intensity."

"It's Not That We Forgot.... We Never Knew"

One of the delights of running a bookstore is the occasional customer who comes in looking for something I've never heard of - and together we find it.

Such is the case with this 2001 volume by Western Kentucky University historian Carlton Jackson [University of Oklahoma Press].

Jackson documents a terrible secret tragedy of World War II in his Allied Secret: The Sinking of HMT "Rohna". This book is an updated edition of an earlier work, Forgotten Tragedy published some five years previously.

Carol Perkins:
Let's Talk About... Field Hockey

It wasn't quite like Paul on the road to Damascus, but Carol Perkins had an *eppitomie which redirected her life to the Highest Calling, with a profound conversion to the becoming an English Major, and serving the students of the the Free State of Metcalfe as an English teacher.
Next previous Carol Perkins column: The Furniture Truck

By Carol Perkins

Few commercials catch my attention, but this one did. The theme was "When I Grow Up, I Want To Be...", and all those speaking were sixty or older. I could identify. Each year I try to reinvent myself, most of the time with little success.

This commercial caused me to think about my college days when I was trying to choose a major. I NEVER wanted to be a teacher. There were already too many in my family, and I wanted to be different. Teaching was an honorable profession, but somehow I wanted more than a classroom, a textbook, and answering to bells.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: What would Mary Magdalene think?

Today, May 16, is the last Sunday of the Easter season in the liturgical calendar, a good time to look back on this celebration and what its appropriate symbols are.- Robert H. Stone

What would Mary Magdalene think about what we've done with Easter?

For years one of my least favorite signs of spring was the artificial grass adorning all of the Easter baskets the boys had every year during their childhood. It was nasty stuff, what with green strands showing up around the house for weeks after Easter, wrapping around the intake rollers on the vacuum cleaner.

What in the world is there to say about "Small Town Cemeteries" except to say that when you have seen one, you have seen them all! Not quite, Jessie!

You are not going to put Liberty, Nebraska's cemetery in that classification! You have to see it, and know about its volunteers, to believe it!
