Scenic Taylor Co., KY: The White Horse

2010-05-09 - Photo by Linda Waggener. Old Lebanon RD, Campbellsville, KY
The old drive to Lebanon, KY, from Campbellsville, KY, took twice as long as new KY 55. Folks who have only experienced the fast route marvel at the beauty of the spectacular view of the Marion County knobs as they enter the descent over Muldraugh Hill on new KY 55. It is gorgeous highway. But it's not a match for the bluer highway, the old road from Lebanon to Campbellsville, over the Singing Bridge, up the whimsically winding way over the hill on the old road, with its picturesque country churches - each vying with the next and the last for pleasant memory; running along rushing roadside streams; past mansions, Clay Hill Memorial Forest, and pastures, like this one with the beautiful horses, just six miles north of Main Street, and just south of this, a magnificent rural church, so aptly named, Pleasant Hill.

Thanks to Lanette Standridge for YouTube link

About: The Flood May 13, 2006: Amazing Nashville video link

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Regarding the letter from Lanette Standridge related to the Nashville Flood of May 2010 and the YouTube link she provided, I must say "Thank you."

I have lived in the Nashville area since 1974 (36 years), and I can tell you that many people here have experienced tremendous personal loss in the last week and yet their spirit and faith have not waivered.

The national media has, with few exceptions, given our plight no attention.

A Tribute to Meme, Edna H. Curry, for Mothers Day

To Meme, Happy Mother's Day: "I know when she got to Heaven on that Monday of April 12th, she got the greatest reward any person could ever get. I know she is in a mansion today with a crown so full of stars that it lights the heavens. I know that as she walked down the streets of gold she heard many people call out thanks to her for all that she had given while on earth." -ALMA RICH

By Alma Rich

I feel truly blessed by God to have had Edna Curry as my aunt. It feels strange to refer to her as "aunt" as she was always so much more than that to me.

Through Meme, as we all called her, I learned what it meant to be a "Momma."

Even though I was not hers biologically, she always treated me as a daughter.

Fudges start Mothers Day celebration on Thursday

Zelma Fudge began her Mother's Day celebration a couple of days early by enjoying a great meal on the Fountain Plaza at Daniel's on The Square in Downtown Columbia, Thursday evening. She, her son Billy Joe, and daughter-in-law Libby the photographer capped off an evening on The Square that began with the Adair County Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble concert at Adair County Middle School. Of course Zelma's great-grand daughter, Hayley Knifley, is a proud member of the Adair County Band. God and family, the arts, good food, atmosphere; what more could you ask for?" -Billy Joe Fudge

Carol Perkins: Sinus!

Weaker ones would have headed to the ER, but Carol Perkins survived a night of sinus agony relying on proven home remedies, chocolate chip cookies, and the Metcalfe County ultimate health potion, a Hot Toddy. And survived.
Next previous Carol Perkins column: The Furniture Truck

By Carol Perkins: Sinus

Spring was once my favorite season, but she has turned against me. With every new bloom or blossom, my sinus cavities scream, "Oh, no, here we go again!" Then they swell shut.

Having just healed from a month of bronchitis and the "crud" as I call it, a mammoth sinus infection attacked me. Having allergies for a few years, I was accustomed to the enemy of nature, but nothing compares to a full-blown sinus infection.

Poetry by Robert Stone:
A Villanelle for Les Miserables

A Villanelle For Les Miserables
on the May 2, 2010 21st anniversary of seeing the musical with Brian Justice
Another day, another destiny,
so many ways I see but I must take
this never ending road to Valkyrie.

So long ago I made the choice to flee
that I might live and find when I awake
another day, another destiny.

But shadows of the past hold fast to me
and darken opportunities to shake
this never ending road to Valkyrie.

How longer still the endless daily plea
that I might fear no more nor need to fake
another day, another destiny.

But sparkling hope is poor reality,
unsteadying the hand that seeks to stake
this never ending road to Valkyrie.

At last sure death will set my body free
but soul may find beyond the fiery lake
another day, another destiny,
this never ending road to Valkyrie.

The tradition continues: a remembrance of juleps past<

Memory is a powerful thing. We never know when an event, a song, a taste, or a smell will trigger a memory of things gone by. Memories can hurt or heal, trouble or console. The Bible is loaded with memories that are cherished and carried into subsequent generations. In Hebrew tradition memories of the Exodus and Promised Land are recalled and renewed in the religious observances of each new cohort of the faith. Memories of New Testament stories take on fresh life in the traditions and sacraments of each succeeding generation of believers.

When little ones are still "arm babies," one of the earliest things they are encouraged to do is "wave bye-bye." Ooh, everyone coos, isn't that adorable! Mercy!

Is that in your memory bank? It wasn't a difficult thing for our kids to learn and did it ever go over big? Of course, there is a time limit on how long it is cute. You expect your kids to move on as the years pass.

Mother's Day should be a happy day, but for some of us who have lost our mothers, it is bittersweet. I love being surrounded by my children, but there is always a touch of sadness in my heart because I miss my own mother so much.

Though You Kill Me, I Must Bury My Brother!

A car load of us motored to Columbia a few days ago to see a production of Jean Anouilh's Antigone. Though we traveled in the midst of wind and storm, I was eager to see one of my favorite plays again.

The fact that Robert Brock, director of the Kentucky Repertory Theatre, directed the play was another plus.

The trip could not be wasted.

A genuine bonus was that the students at Lindsey Wilson College were capable. I cannot imagine a school of that caliber without a theatre program! A group of student actors implored Brock to come and direct. 'Twas a worthy production.
