Richard Robertson sends information on Craycraft, KY

About: Wonders about exact location of Craycraft Adair Co KY inquiry from Carol Reeves Shaul

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Carol (Carol Reeves Shaul), according to maps at my disposal and oral history, I place historic Craycraft about a mile north of East KY 80 on KY 531/Christine RD, at the New Concord Road Junction. Last Fall, in response to a ColumbiaMagazine.com request for submissions for an Old House series, I submitted a photo and some history of a majestic old house in old Craycraft. To my disapointment, the submission has yet to be published, to my knowledge. I have been hoping the photo would prompt more input on the house and Craycraft.

Scenic Old House series: The Murrell House at Craycraft, KY

See next earlier House in series: House on Haskinsville RD>House on Haskinsville RD

By Richard Robertson

The old, majestic Walter Murrell House is in the old Craycraft community of Adair County, about one mile north of 80E and just NE of the New Concord road intersection. It lies on the east side of the road. I took this photo, along with other images of old houses, in the Fall and Winter of 2007, after my relocation from the Front Range of Colorado. The Front Range has been a progressive community with historic resurgent growth spurts. Structures don't last long there.

I worked construction there in the 1970's. Some of the structures I had helped with then have since been replaced with a more modern structure. This includes houses! These progressive practices have left the Front Range devoid of character. I have known for a while that our area here is replete with character, and that knowledge has now been reinforced, being privileged to be a resident. I would like to thank Mike Ratliff for starting this series.

Anita Bryant Robertson's Grandmother resided in the old Craycraft home in the 1960's I was told. This house is still very impressive and in such good shape that it is more likely a candidate for restoration rather than destruction.

From Lower Bull Run,
s/Richard Robertson

Wonders about exact location of Craycraft, Adair Co., KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I just have read an article from the Adair County News, dated 03 Oct 1900 - and the article is from Craycraft - and it is about my Grandfather, Thomas Young. I always heard my Dad, Banty Reeves, speak of Craycraft, but I don't know where in Adair County that is or was.

I bet someone out there knows?

My great-nephew, Brett Conover, sent me this article, which he had found on the Library of Congress website - they now have the Adair County News from the 1900s on at the Library of Congress. The article Brett sent me solved a mystery for my niece, Debra Alexander, and for me.We both have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and didn't know of anyone in our family who had a rheumatic dsease.

Anyway, the short article said that Tom Young left home and was brought back three days later, helpless, and suffering from inflammation rheumatism.
