Ann Melton: Salato family always will be part of community

About: Christmas Memories:None are more special than Columbia, KY, in 60s and 70s

To Nancy (Salato Humphrey) via ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Nancy, What a wonderful story!

You are so right shopping for Christmas was such a special event in downtown Columbia during our childhood.

Remember those candy bins at Nell's Variety? How about sitting a John Lowe's counter for something hot to warm you up. Those were the days.

I only wish our children had just a taste of how simple life was then and how little it took to make our days special.

Your family will always be a part of this community and are missed by many. Hope your family has a very merry and blessed Chistmas.Love Your Always, Nancy Jane,

s/Ann Melton

Misses what was. But Things Change

About: Christmas Memories: None are more special than Columbia, KY, in 60s and 70s

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Dittos to the article from Nancy Salato. I did the same thing, only in the early and mid-sixties. When I visit now, I miss the Square and the way things were then. I occasionally stop in the Walmart, waaaaay out Burkesville RD, but I'm all for progress, and things do change.

I'll always remember the Square, and how we'd circle and go up Jamestown Hill to Jim Dandy's and back again and again. Anything could happen between the Square and JD's. I wonder if kids still do that? Probably not.Things change.

(ADV) Extra cash for the holidays with CM Classifieds

Get extra cash at Christmas time by advertising good but no longer needed items in the For Sale in CM Classifieds. As well, some Christmas items are already in the list of Want to Buy; a good place to check, first, in a search for quick Christmas income.

Maybe it's an item you bought but never opened. Maybe it's a like new bicycle or television set or an extra computer someone might want to buy to allow a Grandmother or Granddad to send emails to grandchildren. Maybe it is a piece of heirloom jewelry. Maybe it's an extra vehicle which would make a good Christmas gift. Or a puppy or kitten. The list is endless.

For individuals in Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell and Taylor Counties, it's (for most ads) FREE. An added benefit, this is the economic equivalent of the Neutralization Diet: While you're selling, you're not spending, which will make the cold days of January and February a lot easier with which to cope. Natasha Rosenstock: The Hannukkah gift-giving dilemma. Link

The Washington Post "On Faith" website has published an article by Natasha Rosenstock The Hannukkah gift-giving dilemma The writer is the daughter of Adair Countian Mary Keltner, Gradyville, KY.

More importantly, the writer is the mother of Molly Ruth Avital Nadel, the most beautiful, smartest, baby girl in the Greater Washington area, according to her unbiased Kentucky grand - though sadly, at this time, CM does not have photographic proof of the claim.

Christmas Poem: Winter is King

Celia Downey submitted this poem from an anonymous local source, and writes, "Ed, I know the author of this poem; however, that author prefers to remain anonymous. This poem is worthy and is therefore submitted for your consideration. Thanks, Celia."

WINTER IS KING
By Ray Miller
A southern sun slow in its rising
Gives us the word and not surprising
Autumn is gone and was short indeed
Here comes winter on his snow white steed

Winter is king on a white crystal throne
He rules in cold magic and all along
He wares a sword-an icicle of white
And sleeps beneath frosty blankets at night

He rules in the mountain-patrols the plains
And brushes the tree tops with freezing rain
He coats the tin roofs-chimneys and drains
And paints a white lily on each window pane

He's sneeky and peeky so cover your head
And wait for the day light to get out of bed
Tip toe to your window and lick off some frost
Then hope that just maybe he's gone and got lost
-Ray Miller
After some arm twisting, Celia Downey did relent, and shared the name of the poet, Ray Miller, on the condition that no one name it to him. "Maybe none of your readers will tell Dad," she said.

Christmas Memories:
None are more special than Columbia, KY, in 60s and 70s

"I've had a lot of wonderful Christmas memories as an adult -Christmases with my husband and three daughters have been wonderful and full of excitement and love, but there will always be a place in my mind, and more importantly, in my heart, for the wonder of those special Columbia holidays." -NANCY SALATO HUMPHREY

By Nancy Salato Humphrey

I can't imagine a more magical place at Christmastime than Columbia in the 60s and 70s.

Maybe it wasn't quite as perfect as the memory that lives in my nearly 50-year-old mind, but holidays in the Columbia I knew as a child, were pretty special. I'm missing my parents a lot this year - Mom died in March and Dad's been gone for 19 years --- so the Christmases of my past are particularly on my mind this year.

Barry Jones: Suggestion to help drowning victim survivor

About: In a sad hour, the Adair County Way at its finest about the search for drowning victim William "Bill" Grover and the role of the search parties

Ed,

Thanks for the well written informative article about the search and recovery of Bill Grover's body. The chain of events the article set in motion was very impressive. It lead to a WKYT Channel 27 and WBKO Channel 13 News report and the community realizing that in the case of tragedy, we really do come together. Thanks, Ed.

I found out today that there is no life insurance and instead of flowers, Jodi has requested donations to help pay for Bill's funeral expenses. They can be made through Stotts Phelps McQueary Funeral Home.

Thanks for all your help,
s/Barry Jones

Tom Chaney No. 233: Walter the Christmas Miracle Dog

Holiday Treacle

Christmas is a'coming. The goose is getting fat -- if goose there be aside from one given at the punchbowl during the office party.

My favorite image of Christmas comes from Br'er Rabbit stuck in the tar baby. Every step he takes to get away binds him tighter.

At Christmas it may not be tar, but molasses and cane syrup will suffice. Those of us subject to the flood of emails from erstwhile friends are awash is sentiment enough to drown the best swimmer.

We are given tales of little kids whose dire disease fortunately goes in remission just in time for Santa to plunge down the sooty chimney, pat the little urchin on the head and give him milk and cookies and a toy train when what he needs is valium to kill the pain.

Poetry by Robert Stone: An I sonnet

An "I" sonnet
By Robert Stone
I could not find a recipe for joy
although both searched I high and searched I low.
How should I these ingredients deploy
so that what I came by with -- bring no woe.

I could not find a recipe for grief.
I could not bring myself to seek for it.
How should I these emotions send like thief
so that what I came down with -- off be split.

I found too many recipes for love
and sorting them found not the one I sought.
How should I these desires most gently shove
so that what I came up with -- come to naught.

I feared to find a recipe for life
so that what I came off with -- be not strife.
-- Robert H. Stone, 22 February 2009

This tour de force sonnet has its origin in an email I wrote the day before asking:"Is your theme for next month 'what I came up with? Or maybe we could each choose our own adverb: came up, came down, came off, came by, etc. Or maybe I could work all four of these into one sonnet!" -Robert Stone

Carol Perkins: Small town department stores

When small towns like Glasgow, Edmonton, and Columbia lost their department stores, something happened to our culture. Christmas shopping will never be the same as when it was walking into the National Store with its Toyland on the third floor
The next earlier Carol Perkins store, Hypnotized

By Carol Perkins

Santa overlooked the city of Glasgow from the oversized upstairs window of the National Store. I was sure he was real. I don't know why I thought he would be standing in that window, night after night, but I had no doubt that he thought this store and this town was special. After all, with all the other places he could have landed, he chose Glasgow.

Rev. Joe N. Welsh: Fiorello LaGuardia, A Real Uniter, Not A Divider

Another Angle, the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor, originally published in the Hart County News-Herald, Munfordville, KY, 11 December 2005. Editor Robert Stone re-read this story about a uniter, one-time Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, a Republican mayor of New York, who, "though short in stature, stood tall as a uniter." Mr. Stone thought thought it especially fit the times today

By the Rev. Joey N. Welsh
E-Mail: joey_n_welsh@hotmail.com

We now live in an era when children are growing up to believe that voting and participation in politics mean primarily prejudging, judging, and labeling other people. Kids today mostly see that anyone who asks questions or disagrees with one side in a political dispute is viewed by the opposing side as an evil threat to a way of life.

We are feeding our children today on weak gruel flavored with the bitter spiciness of superficial civics. I occasionally hear talk about uniting rather than dividing the American public, but I see precious little unification or cooperation going on amongst the spasms of name-calling these days.
