CWC: The library is clean, well-lighted place

2009-12-12 - Colonel Wm. Casey School, 220 Gen. John Adair DR, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. A walk through at Colonel William Casey dispels for all but the most cynical the notion that neglect and lack of maintenance is the reason it needs replacing. It would be hard to find a school building in America which gets such attention. Everyone from a maintenance crew which has to spend too much time trying to "make do," to teachers who should not have to take time away from what they love to do most - teach, to an administration which, because of necessity has to spend too much in public treasure trying to patch and fix the hard to patch and unfixable. Even the bright, well-stocked library room, above, has shelves of books which, at any time, can be ruined by water damage when the flat roof leaks.

LWC Commencement Dec. 2009: 314 receive degrees

David Hawpe tells 314 LWC graduates they can take control of lives. Hawpe and Frances Smothers, Louisville, KY; and Bill Squires of Greensburg, KY awarded honorary doctorates; the all-important and eagerly awaited list of area graduates is being organized and will be available in a few days.

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Relations

COLUMBIA, KY - Much of life is beyond control, but people can take control of their lives.

That was the message delivered Saturday morning by Kentucky hall of fame journalist David V. Hawpe at Lindsey Wilson College's 2009 winter commencement.

"If these points sound contradictory, it's because they are," Hawpe said in his commencement address. "Life is one big contradiction. The best way to deal with that fact is by living an authentic life - by living according to your own best principles and values."

Anonymous reader wants to know if tax will go away

The following notes, both signed "JR" were received. There are some wild misunderstandings in his statement, such as stating the tax as being 5.6%. IT IS NOT. It is 1/100th of that amount. But it is the one of the misunderstandings about the tax which is being circulated. -EW
"I want everyone to be aware what this will really cost you. The radio ad is saying it will cost the average tax payer $20.00 a year. That is simply not true. That means that the average property value is only about 35,000.00. To figure what you will pay anually take your home value and multiply that by .0056.

"I want to know if this tax will stop once the new school is paid for. I don't mind at all to pay the tax for the new school. We need it and our children and teachers deserve a nice facility. However I have a hard time paying this indefinitely. I would rather write a check for the 12% however many years it is needed to build the school, than pay 5.6% for the rest of my life.

s/"JR"
The idea stated that taxes never go away has an element of truth in it. Most taxes don't go away. But many do. In Adair County, the Adair County Hospital District no longer levies a property tax, and it is authorized to do so. -EW

Joe Hare: We must pass the tax, but . . .

Writer is satisfied that the tax is the best option at this time, but he makes similar stand as Ralph Waggener, that the school board needs to be held accountable, be more open, and that the public needs to be more involved
About: Renovation of CWC would require ALL local funds greater taxes

By Joe Hare

I have been a little busy this week and have not read a lot regarding the Nickel Tax, so I was rereading all the post on Columbia Magazine and noticed something that I had not thought about before.

It is the statement by Mr Treece that the"committee" in 2003 and in 2007 had determined that CMC was not repairable and them the state agreed. I am wondering who was on this committee, if it was all school personel, do we have a conflict of intrest in this decision? If this committee has determined that CWC was repairable would the state have agreeded with that decision?

Traci Sharpe: It's about the future of Adair County!

See also: CWC LIST Community Working for Children, grows again

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Please add my name to the list of supporters. One of the hardest things for people to see is the poor shape of the building, because the teachers, staff and administration at CWC spend so much of their PERSONAL money and time to make sure the school is clean, warm and inviting for our children.

Their hard work and dedication makes it hard to see how pitiful the "building" truly is. We all have to remember not to judge a book by its cover and remember that what you see on the outside can truly mask what lies beneath.

Please vote YES on Tuesday for the sake of our kids, our community and the future of Adair County!

CWC: Vote YES for our wonderful Adair students

See also: CWC LIST Community Working for Children, grows again

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I am a former teacher having taught at Col. Wm. Casey for 25 yrs. and have been retired for 11 yrs. I would like to state my reasons for voting yes for the nickel tax.

Col. Wm. Casey was in poor condition when I was there.

The electrical and heating systems were not functioning properly as well as many other problems.

This is not about Supt. Treece or board members.

It is a step in the right direction for our wonderful Adair Co. students. Take a look at the modern schools in the surrounding counties - so voters please consider our children and vote YES December 15, 2009.

Thank you.

Former Casey teacher tells why she'll vote YES

Maintenance is not the problem at CWC, she says. The problem is a heating system which is out of date, a flat roof which can't be fixed, an electrical system which can't carry the load, and problems inherent in a building it doesn't make sense to renovated
About: Col. Wm. Casey School maintenance has not been neglectedBy Teresa Richard

Hello, I was a teacher at Col. Wm. Casey for many years and even though I teach at a different school, now.

I want to share my thoughts on "Casey," and the need for a new building.

First, the staff and teachers at Casey are no doubt some of the best in my calling. I treasure my years at Casey.

Darren Ballou leads Raider scoring in lost cause

Freshman from Columbia, KY has double-double, 17 points and 13 rebounds, but Lambuth run in second half seals 87-75 fate

By Dan White, Assistant LWC Sports Information Director

McKenzie, TN - After leading 40-39 at halftime, Lambuth (TN.) University went on a 16-1 run at the start of the second half to put away the Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team 87-75 on Friday at the Roy N. Baker Fieldhouse.

Turnovers plagued the Blue Raiders the entire game as Lambuth's high-energy man-to-man defense forced them into 23 giveaways. That, plus 57.9 percent shooting from the free-throw line erased any chance of a Lindsey Wilson comeback.
