Hope you had a great Thanksgiving

The next earlier Teresa Kindred column, A Kindred Spirit:Romance, Richard Gere, and Tennis Shoes

by Teresa Bell Kindred
www.nanahood.com

Cooking Thanksgiving dinner for twenty or thirty people should not be a big deal when you've raised five children, but it was for me this year. When the boys are out of school they bring all their friends and hang out at my house, which is good except when you are trying to get ready company.

Wednesday I went to the grocery and hauled enough food home to feed a third world country. Besides the one BIG meal it takes a ton of food to feed seventeen year old boys and their buddies. Of course when I got home no one was here to help me carry everything in so I hauled it all in and began putting things away.

First Couple of the Adair Co. Marching Band Boosters

2009-11-29 - New York City - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne. After the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Adair County Band Boosters President Doyle Lloyd and wife Mary Lloyd posed for this portrait by Shamarie Claiborne. "They both do so much for the band," Shamarie Claiborne said. The Lloyds are the parents of senior Chris Lloyd and future band member Anna Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd is a banker; Mrs. Lloyd is a pharmacist, both demanding positions, but, somehow, they find whatever time is needed for band booster activities.
Doyle Lloyd has posted a video of the parade at Adair County Band in the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and, for all his AdairBand.com photos, go to Adair Band's Albums

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Words of sense, sensitivity, and civility

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor. 14 January 2007
By the Rev. Joey N. Welsh
E-Mail: joey_n_welsh@hotmail.com

I have been reading and appreciating the writings of Garry Wills since before I was an adult. Wills is the author of nearly three dozen books on history and religion, as well as of numerous magazine articles and frequent pieces for The New York Review of Books. Born in Atlanta in 1934, he has been busy publishing significant and thoughtful books since the presidency of John F. Kennedy.

In his early adulthood Wills studied for the Catholic priesthood. He later earned his doctorate in ancient classics and taught Greek for many years at Johns Hopkins University. He is Professor of History Emeritus at Northwestern University. Wills is possessed of a sparkling intellect, and his readers are richer because of that fact.

Thanks to Shamarie for keeping community informed

About: The Band is home at 8:35amCT, Sat,, Nov. 28 2009 by Shamarie Claiborne

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:
Thanks to Sharmarie for keeping us at home posted on the happenings with the band. It was comforting to know what they were doing and when they would be doing different things. Doug and his family were on one of those buses. I guess Doug thought it took a long time to get there when he can make it in such a short time flying. Doug can have a good time no matter where he is. They all seemed to have the best of times when they returned to good Ole Adair County - Home!

Poetry by Robert Stone: Searching for common interests, a sonnet

As today, November 29, 2009, is the first day of Advent, poet Robert Stone thought this sonnet seems appropriate.

Searching for common interests
A sonnet by Robert Stone
In Advent Christmas parties are in force,
providing opportunities to meet
a stranger who has also come by course
of being with companions on a beat.

And not by chance in winter and in spring
the search for common interests goes on,
the testing possibilities to string
eternal thoughts in parallel neat spawn.

But finally in fall a parting comes --
one chooses new adventures in the west,
the other stays in place where habit runs,
each hopes for satisfaction and for rest.

A handshake seems too small a gesture when
there may not be togetherness again.
-- Robert Stone, May 3, 2009

Celia's Law of Photography worked too well, Saturday

About: "Birds of KY Flight of Sandhill Cranes"

The Celia's Law of Photography No. 1 was in play yesterday: She writes:
"Ed, I've learned that: The best pictures are the ones that occur when the camera is absent. While out walking Saturday, the air became deafening. Looking to the sky, I saw the source: 6 then 7 HUGE 'V's" of, I guess, geese, or maybe sandhill cranes heading south. It was an amazing and beautiful sight. Of course, no camera. Celia Downey
Thanks for the report. Is didn't even have the good sense to be out looking for them yesterday. Fortunately Kay Haupt did. We've also got other Sandhill Crane photos in the archives. Just enter "Sandhill Crane," to find the links. Though, event with the Kay Haupt photo and the one of Sandhill Cranes at Egypt, KY, from George Rice.

More than Hardy Boys: The Books of My Childhood

About: Tom Chaney, 30 November 2009: Think books for Christmas

by Doug Anderson

Tom Chaney's "Think BOOKS for Christmas" sent me on a trip down memory lane. I remember when I was starting to read those early adventure stories too. I only remember reading one of the Hardy Boys books - something about "Cold in the Snow" -- when I was of the early age to start reading such....

The series I read more of involved the character Rick Brant. I think that the best of that series was "The Whispering Box Mystery." I also remember reading a sort of Tarzan-like book called "Bamba the Jungle boy." And again I read only one of the Tom Corbet space ranger series. There was always Tom Swift, but I don't remember any of those books being sold at the time I began to read these types of books.

"I have traveled many places, but none is quite like our hometown of Columbia, KY"
About: The Band is home at 835amCT Sat Nov 28 2009 by Shamarie Claiborne

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Thank you for keeping us updated so well. You did a fine job. Welcome back everyone. I have traveled many places, but none is quite like our hometown of Columbia, KY. Here we all know one another and know that in thick or thin we are all one big happy family, which supports our young people who work hard to accomplish their dreams.

Macy's was a dream come true. I can only imagine the look on our kids faces when they lined up to march in the parade. What an experience! It sure was breathtaking for us proud Adair County folks.

We are so proud of you..the sky is the limit when you work hard.

Tom Chaney, 30 November 2009: Think books for Christmas

Tom Chaney essay, today, Think BOOKS for Christmas
The next earlier Tom Chaney essay is The Ledger of a Country Store

By Tom Chaney

My favorite Christmas gifts have always been books. I don't remember a time when that was not true. Early on I recall an aunt giving me Bram Stoker's Dracula with an inscription in her hand urging me to read it late at night by dim light amidst a howling wind.

I had a best friend at the other end of the block. After Christmas day got somewhat light, we'd meet at one house or the other to see what the other got under the tree.
