Thanks for flying the flags

About: Happy Flag Day photo by Linda Waggener

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I was so thrilled to see the flags flying in our City. It reminded me of the days when Bill Walker, also known as "Daddy Bill" by the younger folks, who for years always had the flags out not only on Flag day, but all the Holidays. Many times it would not be a holiday, but Bill would have the flags flying. After Bill's death, Dennis Loy stepped up and for several years kept the flags flying. I hope they will continue to fly each holiday, during our festivals, and other events. A special thank you to those responsible for getting the flags up!

Carol Perkins: The Gift of Music

To our impatient readers threatening to cancel subscriptions if we didn't get Carol Sullivan online, on time, in the Sunday ColumbiaMagazine.com newspaper: Hold your horses. This is worth the wait. For Carol Perkins fans, for music fans, for history buffs: This piece, about Lonzo & Oscar and the incredible musical talents of Metcalfe's Sullivan and Acree families, is a story you won't put down till you're finished reading, and maybe re-reading. -EW

By Carol Perkins

"The Gift of Music"

Not to be bragging, but I come from a musically gifted family. The Sullivan boys were known in the Cedar Flat community, as well as throughout Metcalfe County, as guys who could play any instrument put before them. Carl, Walter, Johnny (Lonzo), Ernest and Phillip played mainly the guitar. Rollin (Oscar) is one of the most spectacular mandolin players in the world. The girls, Clarice (Baker) and Ruby (Martin), were pianists, and my dad Henry played just about anything that had strings or would blow. Even though some could read a little music, they all played by ear. That was a true gift.

Happy Hollow story a reminder of deadly tornado of 1971

Memory rekindled of a chilling account by the late journalist Pete Walker in The Columbia Statesman about the tornado which, on April 27, 1971, took the lives of six Adair Countians and injured some 35-40 others. Those who lost their lives were Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Smith, Mrs. Herschel Cundiff, Douglas Froedge, Ruth Ann McCarol, 7, and her mother, Robbie McCarol, 27. For those of us who lived through that night, the acount is difficult to read, even today, through the cloud of tears. -CM

Inventory at BRR farmstead: All black labs accounted for

Search for owner of missing black lab continues
About: Found Black male lab on Bull Run RD Columbia KY

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Just to be sure we held roll call up at Tucker's Station on Bull Run Road. Looks like the whole family is accounted for - 10 dogs, 5 cats and 2 humans. It seems that everyone living out on Bull Run is a dog lover - I'd like to suggest that we rethink the name "Bull Run" - wouldn't "Dog Run" be closer to the truth?

s/Barbara Armitage

Maybe it's the big signs at both ends of Bull Run Road the dogs can read, announcing: "Here abide suckers for strays." Have often thought it might be a pretty good reincarnation to come back as a stray or a songbird on BRR. Definitely one of Adair County's great neighborhoods, for humans and animals. Are y'all accepting new applications for residency? -EW

Would report pet thieves to police if crime witnessed

About: A heartbroken Betty Sue tells of Gingers tragedy

Betty Sue, via ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I am so sorry about your little dog. I know, it hurts your family so much to lose her. May you find some peace in knowing that she gave you and your family so much pleasure and fun times. Anyone who would steal one's pet should be put in jail. This is a crime, just in case theives read this.

I for one would not hesitate to notify the police if I were to se a person trying to take a pet. Shame on whoever did this. They broke this family's heart.

Rev. Joey N. Welsh: Anne Frank, a Legacy in Words

ANOTHER ANGLE: the occasional musings of a Kentucky pastor
A LEGACY IN WORDS
From The Hart County News-Herald, June 5, 2005; posted first in ColumbiaMagazine.com on June 17, 2007; made more appropriate today, June 14, 2009, because of news in the nation in the past week.

By The Rev. Joey N. Welsh

Sometimes we encounter words of wisdom from sources that seem unlikely to us. Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929, and she died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in early 1945, six weeks before the camp was liberated by the Allies.

Commentary: For more cycling in Columbia area

Commentart on: Advantages of slower transportation. The need for bike racks and bike security. The proposals for revitalization of Downtown Columbia.

By Tami Wilson

I'd love to see bicycling be more encouraged as a form of transportation in the Columbia area.

I know some bicyclists from Lindsey, and maybe some others do bike around, but being truly accepted without an attitude of not belonging on the road is something I'd like to see.

Ginger has been laid to rest

About: On the pain of loss of pet which has become like family

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Thanks, Devonna, for your kind words of comfort.

I wanted to let you know that we did locate her and she has been laid to rest. This was such a senseless and heartless act. She had to have been taken over a 4 ft. chain link fence with a locked gate. We have a doggie door which goes into the house, so she stayed in the house almost all the time. We had Ginger almost 8 years. She is greatly missed.

Thanks, again.

I can't think of many things that provide fulfillment like gardening does. What is there about stirring up the soil, planting some tiny seed, watching them come up and produce food to eat that is so satisfying? It's unlike anything else you do. Simple and yet so complex, it has to be divinely involved.

Usually the president makes a proclamation to make it flag week that week but we could just go ahead and fly them proclamation or no proclamation, just patriotic. -MAURY LEWIS | (ID:4809, Comment)
