The storm which took the Happy Hollow barn occurred on March 29, 1997, a terrible night for so many across Adair County.

By looking at my records I have written in my scrap books, a tornado hit the county in the Charlie Morrison Road area and jumped and moved across the county to the Cane Valley, Holmes Bend, Pellyton areas at approximately 7:05pmCT on Saturday evening, March 29, 1997.

The devastation to these areas was quite wide spread. The Happy Hollow Barn was just one of many structures destroyed.

In my 18 years with Emergency Management this was the first and maybe the worst time the I have seen the county suffer so. Fortunately no lives were lost on the evening of March 29, 1997 as they had been in the past when tornado's have hit the county. The County also was hit with a tornado in 1998 the cause damage in the Pelleyton area of the community again.
Thanks for keeping the meticulous records which are so interesting as history and remind us of the need to anticipate and be prepared for like events at this time of the year. It's another reminder that Adair County, KY, may have the best emergency response services anywhere. For sure they are the most dedicated.PS: Wonder how much it would cost to the barn back? What a tourist attraction, what a tribute to Walter and Ruby Grant that would be if people raised the money and the owners would allow its restoration. -EW

Happy Hollow Barn: The day it was lost, March 30, 1997

2009-06-14 - 1792 Holmes Bend RD, Adair Co. District 6, Columbia, KY - Photo by Greg Thomas.
The SAD DAY ONE OF ADAIR COUNTY'S MOST TREASURED LANDMARKS WAS LOST: Adair County Emergency Disaster Manager Greg Thomas writes, "Here is a picture I snapped of the Happy Hollow barn on March30, 1997." The barn was a victim of a tornado which touched down first on Charlie Morrison Road, then skipped over to hit land in the Cane Valley, Holmes Bend, and then the Pellyton community areas of Adair County, in an evening of weather terror. Update: LuAnn Grant points out that the tornado actually hit on Good Friday, March 29, 1997.
