Six firefighters + passing hero save house from grass fire

2009-01-02 - Taylor Ford Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Six Adair County Firemen and a passing hero saved the home of Christy Burton, upper right, from a grass fire this afternoon, Friday, January 2, 2009, at around 4:00pmCT. The first person to come to the aid Mrs Burton was Nick Wortham, who was on his way to celebrate his birthday today. Mr. Wortham, owner of Columbia's Donut Express, beat back the fire using a wet blanket. "But," he said, pointing to Chris Bragg on the back of Grass Truck #127, "I couldn't have stopped it without those fellows." Those fellows included, lower right, in Grass Truck #127, Driver Tommy Corbin and fellow firefighters, Wayne Ray in the co-pilot's seat, and on right, back seat, Justin Bailey, and Bradley Caldwell. Fireman Mike Keltner was on his way back from his Air-Evac job in Liberty, KY, and arrived in the red truck in the foreground. Firefighter Chris Bragg also arrived by private pickup. St. Wilma Lavelle should have many stars in her crown!

by Morris Shepherd

Today Wilma Lavelle Farris Shepherd has officially become a Saint!! Doesn't that sound just about right: Saint Wilma!!

I can't remember how many miracles have to be proven before you can be declared a saint, but I am sure Lavelle qualifies!
  1. She has now, today, suffered through this marriage for fifty five years. It all started on 1-1-1954.
  2. She has stayed home and has raised our sons to be responsible, successful adults while I: played about 9,847 games of softball, 2301 rounds of golf, 1043 basketball games plus assorted horse shoe, corn hole and ping pong tournaments
  3. And other sufferings to numerous to mention
May she have many, many stars in her crown!!
Amen. -CM

Carol G. Parker remembers childhood times at Sulphur Creek

About: New Year's sunrays on Sulphur Creek by Dr. Gary Lane

By Carol Goodin Parker

What a beautiful photo! I have wonderful memories of Sulphur Creek, having grown up in a hollow nearby Sulphur Creek Road. My brother, Homer, and I hurried to get the corn "chopped out" or the fields plowed so we could go swimming with all our neighbors.

Unfortunately, I was the only girl swimming most of the time - much to my grandfather's dismay. He just couldn't tolerate the idea of all those boys seeing my legs.

Also, my dad and I often fished (successfully, I might add) for catfish at night in Sulphur Creek. Those memories will be with forever. Thanks to the photographer for refreshing my memories.

Looking ahead: A little town square gathering place

About: Looking back at 2008, looking ahead

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I would like to see a little town square in Columbia. A place where people could come together to visit, relax or just enjoy the day. Be it sunshine, rain, or soft falling snow. Not only would I like to see this happen, I believe in my heart it would be something most everyone could enjoy.

So many folks in our town are either retired, lonely, or simpy need a place to visit and not have to worry about dressing up or spending money.

For all I would like to see Peace, Joy and Love. God bless our town and our country in 2009.

s/Alice Wheeler
