Memorable Old Columbia, KY: T.E. Waggener Store

2009-01-02 - Corner of Burkesville ST & Square, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo from family album.
T.E. Waggener Store (the sign over the door says "Gill & Waggener" was located at the corner of Burkesville Street and the Public Square. The picture is believed to be from the 1914-1917 era. Standing in the doorway are, from left, Kathreen Willis (White), Mrs. Carl (Lula) Strange, and the proprietor, Thomas E. Waggener. T.E. Waggener was the father of the late Edwin Waggener, the grandfather of Columbia businessman Dan Waggener, and the great grandfather Columbia businessman Danny Waggener and Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton. His birthday, April 26, is the same as a namesake, Thomas Waggener, owner of Main Street Bikes in Columbia, KY. The building has been, among other things, the Firestone Store, Susan Lynn's and later Mitzi's, and is currently owned by Dr. Ben Arnold. The poster in the window advertises a revival service with evangelist Weldon Greenfell. The identities of the two girls in the doorway have not been determined. Any help would be appreciated. Picture from the Past: Return to Rocky Hill - Blackie Nixon

2009-01-02 - Rocky Hill School, Columbia, KY - Photo by Nina Nixon.
In August of 1995, Blackie Nixon (ACHS 1958) made a visit back to Rocky Hill School on Rocky Hill Road, just north of the Columbia city limits. Kids from the Petty's Fork area from Paul Mann Road out about one mile and from the Old Greensburg Road, now Pelham Branch Road area attended grade school there. Blackie and his twin brother Red walked across what is now the Adair County School District main campus north, across what is now the Columbia Western Bypass, to attend school there. When schools consolidated in the 1950's grade school students went to Columbia Grade School on Frazier Avenue in Columbia. Only a few boards and remnants of the foundation exist today. Nixon now divides his time between Hillsboro, IN; Columbia, KY; Florida, and whereever the University of Kentucky basketball team is playing.A Today Feature picture

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Near to heaven, The Golden Road

2009-01-02 - Vester, KY - Photo by Pen.
ONE GET'S NO ARGUMENT from Vester residents and little from other Adair Countians, that KY 206 is about as close to heaven as a body can get. Late evening sunlight gives the highway the appearance of being paved with gold, and to add a heavenly quality, the pickup truck appears to be hovering! A Today Feature picture

Six firefighters + passing hero save house from grass fire

2009-01-02 - Taylor Ford Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Six Adair County Firemen and a passing hero saved the home of Christy Burton, upper right, from a grass fire this afternoon, Friday, January 2, 2009, at around 4:00pmCT. The first person to come to the aid Mrs Burton was Nick Wortham, who was on his way to celebrate his birthday today. Mr. Wortham, owner of Columbia's Donut Express, beat back the fire using a wet blanket. "But," he said, pointing to Chris Bragg on the back of Grass Truck #127, "I couldn't have stopped it without those fellows." Those fellows included, lower right, in Grass Truck #127, Driver Tommy Corbin and fellow firefighters, Wayne Ray in the co-pilot's seat, and on right, back seat, Justin Bailey, and Bradley Caldwell. Fireman Mike Keltner was on his way back from his Air-Evac job in Liberty, KY, and arrived in the red truck in the foreground. Firefighter Chris Bragg also arrived by private pickup.
