Dykes Airmail: Roadside humor went awry once

2009-01-01 - KY 900, Glens Fork, District 3, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
IT'S BEEN A TRADEMARK of Eldridge Dykes places, both when he lived at the intersection of Montpelier and Keen-Wilson Road in the Zion community, and here, at his spread on KY 900 in the suburbs of Glens Fork: An airborne "Dykes Airmail" postal box. It's good for a smile or a laugh from most who slow down when they pass it, but one time, his brother D. Roy Dykes says, it backfired. "He was waiting for a big check," the brother said, "and it never came. He asked his carrier, then Joe Hunter, of he had seen any sign of it. He was getting pretty anxious. Joe Hunter told Eldridge he sure had. And he had delivered it three weeks ago. 'It looked so important I just figured you'd want it airmail, Joe Hunter told him." D. Roy Dykes recalls. "That Joe Hunter was as big a card as Eldridge, and he'd taken a ladder or had some other device to put that envelope with the big check in Eldridge's airmail box. Eldridge had to figure a way to get it," he said, "but he never for a minute let the trick make him think of taking that airmail box down." Roy Dykes told it on his brother from a safe distance. He lives in Florida. A Today Feature picture.

Kudos to LWC! Writer suggests direct gives to college

Writer lauds Dan Koger's ideas on Lindsey Wilson owning golf course, re-invigorating it to create unimaginable intangible benefits for community
About: OP-ED - Pinewood: It's not just about the golf course

Ed,

I must respond to your OP-ED about the golf course!

I say kudos to Lindsey Wilson College and the Columbia citizens who have such a forward-looking vision to save the Pine Wood golf course!!

I was a resident of Adair County for only twelve years, but the fond memories keep drawing me back 'home' after being away for more than 50 years!

Billy Humble on Pinewood: Let's just feed one hog at a time

About: Pinewood CC serves just small portion of community

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

When the county gets the fair market value out of the rescue squad property they could consider helping the Pinewood. Let's just feed one hog at a time.

Letter: Would question business acumen if golf is decider

To ColumbiaMagazine.com

I agree 100% with the comments made earlier about the golf course. I think it borders on the ridiculous to ask the public to pay for keeping an "attraction" which a very small percentage of the county uses. I would question the integrity and business acumen of a company which based their decision to locate here, or not, on whether we have a golf course!s/Debra Dickson

Kristin Goodin helped with Rose Bowl Parade floats

My daughter, Kristin Goodin, helped work on the floats of the City of West Covina and the Rotary Club International in this year's 2009 Rose Bowl Parade which takes place in Pasadena, California.

Kristin graduated from Western Kentucky University on December 13, 2008, with a degree in Agriculture and a minor in Biology.

She is attending the parade for the second consecutive year, along with several other Western students. To anyone who watches the parade today, know there was a little bit of Adair County and Kentucky represented in the production of the parade. -INETTE GOODIN

Writer: Pinewood CC serves just small portion of community

ColumbiaMagazine.com supports the efforts to raise private money to enable Lindsey Wilson College to own and operate e Pinewood Country Club. The following comments, from a different viewpoint, is from "An Adair County Citizen," whose name and contact information is on file. -EW
About: OP-ED - Pinewood: It's not just about the golf course

Dear Ed,

I just finished reading the article about Pinewood Country Club. I admire the efforts of Mr. Walker and the Adair Co. Community, along with Lindsey Wilson College, to preserve the Country Club. However, it really bothers me to see Pinewood being used as a "prop" to usher in money from members of the Community. The truth (as I see it) is that Pinewood is a place where a very small portion of our community gathers to socialize, play golf, and possibly have a wedding reception or family gathering. It simply isn't a place where all people in our community can go or use.

You have my permission to water down any of my comments, Ed. Perhaps it is your duty to do such. I am still suffering from culture shock and I use that term loosely. Change is certainly not a welcomed thing in Adair County, Kentucky. I can live with that, but I insist that my freedom of speech is being stifled.
