Writer: Pinewood CC serves just small portion of community ColumbiaMagazine.com supports the efforts to raise private money to enable Lindsey Wilson College to own and operate e Pinewood Country Club. The following comments, from a different viewpoint, is from "An Adair County Citizen," whose name and contact information is on file. -EW About: OP-ED - Pinewood: It's not just about the golf course Dear Ed, I just finished reading the article about Pinewood Country Club. I admire the efforts of Mr. Walker and the Adair Co. Community, along with Lindsey Wilson College, to preserve the Country Club. However, it really bothers me to see Pinewood being used as a "prop" to usher in money from members of the Community. The truth (as I see it) is that Pinewood is a place where a very small portion of our community gathers to socialize, play golf, and possibly have a wedding reception or family gathering. It simply isn't a place where all people in our community can go or use. The actual number of people in our community that have even stepped foot on Pinewood's property would probably be very small. Therefore, I don't think it is okay to label Pinewood as a place that would "improve the greater benefit of everyone in Adair County." While I agree that not having a golf course might sway some businesses from locating in Adair Co., I don't think it would be the real reason why a business or company would or would not locate here. I think our outstanding people and sense of a caring community, Adair Countian's work ethic, our proximity to Lake Cumberland and Green River, and the infrastructure and highway systems that are in place would be of much greater concern to potential businesses. The fact that Lindsey Wilson College is willing to open their pocketbooks and provide some financial support speaks tremendously for the college. However, the revenue that LWC would generate (according to the article) in two years would pay for the investment that they would make. There probably aren't many businesses that wouldn't like to pay for their investment in two years or less. In closing, I don't want to sound like "the Grinch," but I just think that asking community members, many of whom are pretty much financially stretched, to provide finances for a golf course that caters to a small number of people (overall) in our community, is a little irrational. As a community, we are yet to see any real positive economic development in our community for many years now. I doubt that not having Pinewood as an attraction for prospective businesses would greatly influence that development at this point. Sincerely, Adair Co.
