The Three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

By Lisa Lee

A lot of open burning isn't necessary. Brush could be composted, piled up for wildlife or just left to decompose. Newspapers could be recycled. Your old attic junk could be given away for someone else to reuse.

By making a few sensible choices, you could reduce the amount of throw-away material you create in the first place. The possibilities are endless.

Gov. Beshear issues order to prevent gas price gouging

Executive Order also extends to building supplies, other goods

From Commonwealth News Center

In response to the dramatic spike in gas prices overnight, Gov. Steve Beshear today signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency to prevent price gouging in the commonwealth. Under this order, the governor can apply Chapter 367 of the Kentucky Revised Statutes to implement provisions of the law aimed at protecting the citizens of Kentucky from predatory pricing by unscrupulous providers, including but not limited to gasoline and building supplies.

"I am outraged by the voracious practices of price gouging we are seeing," said Gov, Beshear. "Today, I have taken an extraordinary step to protect the consumers of the commonwealth from these predators."

Rep. Whitfield wants gas price gouging reported

Congressman Ed Whitfield issued the following statement on gas price gouging:U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield's office sent this message from the First Kentucky U.S. Congressman to ColumbiaMagazine.com at 12:24pmCT today.
I am very concerned to hear reports of alleged price gouging taking place in Kentucky as Hurricane Ike threatens oil production in the Gulf Coast. I have worked hard to ensure that consumers are protected against unfair and excessive price spikes and I have supported legislation which has given the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) more authority to investigate alleged price gougers. I would encourage anyone who believes they have been a victim of price gouging to report the incident to the Department of Energy at http://gaswatch.energy.gov/. They will review the data and refer any findings to the FTC, the U.S. Department of Justice or individual State Attorneys General. My staff and I will be monitoring this situation in the days to come. I will not tolerate price gouging and will take the necessary steps to see that the public is protected, including Federal and State prosecution of those suspected of price gouging.
Report gas price gouging to Department of Energy

Feedback: Chris Bennett Travels, Thomas Jefferson Back Porch

Pontification upon reading writing below picture: Thomas Jefferson Back Porch

I feel compelled to point out the ColumbiaMagazine.com error in the Back Porch story.

Clearly Mr Bennett meant to point out the DIS-advantages his own porch had. Obviously the lack of these distractions makes Mr Jefferson's facility the more attractive choice for fulfilling the primary purpose of a "back porch" which is to accomplish absolutely NOTHING!

This is not meant as a criticism of Mr. Bennett, who adds luster to ColumbiaMagazine.com. It is merely mentioned in the furtherance of indolence.

COF: It's a sad day when we at CM get bushwhacked for what is our strongest trait: Dedication to not doing work that ought not to be did.. We support indolence as much as anybody in Adair County. It's our birthright. -EW

Chris Bennett Travels in History: Thomas Jefferson's Back Porch

Chris Bennett: Some of my favorite Jefferson quotes are:
  • "Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper"
  • "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent" and
  • "Every generation needs a new revolution"

By Chris Bennett

On July 4th I took my 14 year old nephew on a 5 state, 2000 mile tour of some of the most important historical places in the eastern United States.

We hit attractions like every major Civil War battlefield, and the most important Revolutionary War battlefield, Yorktown.

This year's event is scheduled for tomorrow morning, Saturday, September 13, 2008, beginning at 10:00amCT. We chose to move it to September hoping for cooler weather.
