FROM "RIVERMEN OF THE CUMBERLAND" A THE KY 90 BRIDGE: From Chris Bennett's log of a boat trip down the Cumberland River. This entry is from June 3, 2007, when the craft was in Cumberland County KY, at mile 423-421. CHRIS BENNETT WRITES "South of Burkesville the Cumberland River channel is very wide.
In times of low river flow some areas become very shallow. This slowed our progress the second day of our trip, as we had to get out of the boat, and wade through the cold swift water, while dragging the boat along. During the nineteenth century steam boat era, this also was a problem, especially in dry times. The nineteenth century solution was to stack huge stones up in piles, building stone walls dikes on both sides of the river channel. The intent was to make the river narrower, and deeper. In the photo which accompanies this item, you can see the remains of the stone walls, floods and time have scattered the huge rocks although the bulk of them are still in place. This is also a place where we had to get out of the boat and drag it through the shallow water, also seen in the photo."

Larry Smith Photos from the Past:
Campbellsville Drive-In Fire 1972

2008-09-12 - Columbia Road, Campbellsville, KY - Photo From Larry Smith collection.
LARRY SMITH found this great photo from the past while scanning from the archives at the Campbellsville Fire Department. "They've really done a great job documenting their work," he writes. "The Campbellsville Drive-In fire was in 1972. screen caught fire and was destroyed at the Campbellsville Drive-in Theatre. The Screen was rebuilt and the Drive-in re-opened in 1973 and closed in 1980. Cox Interiors is now located in this location on Columbia Road (KY 55) on the south side of Campbellsville." The great old theatre was showing How Sweet It Is (1968) a hippies-era comedy with James Garner as Grif Henderson and Debbie Reynolds, as his wife, Jenny, at the time. Larry Smith is the news anchor at the WAVE, FM 92.7, South Central Kentucky Historian, photographer, who has an extensive file of historic photographs. Green River Mussel on the move near old Evans place off Little Cake Rd.

2008-09-12 - The Old Evans Place, Green River near Little Cake Road, Adair County, KY - Photo By Shamarie Claiborne.
"My favorite Sundays are spent with Kevin out taking pictures," Shamarie Claiborne wrote with this photo. "He always takes me somewhere new and always helps me find great pictures like this Fresh water mussel found in Green River, off of Little Cake Road." The trail, she said, was left by the mussel, which was moving at a discernible but but not so rapid a pace. Fresh water mussels in the stretch of Green River below the dam are now the subject of a being study by acquatic biologists Dr. Richard Kessler and Prof. Alan Reid. This photo was taken near the Old Evans Brothers Place on the Neatsville end of the Little Cake Road, not too far from the Neatsville Green River Bridge on KY 206. Flickr. Australian motorcycle riders at Vester

2008-09-12 - Vester, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
VESTER HAS BECOME A VERY COSMOPOLITAN CITY. After today, Vester has had tourists from every state in the Australia but four--Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, and South Australia, which has six states in the Commonwealth. Rhett Kelly, left, is a resident of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and Adam Bell is from Perth, Western Australia. The two were on a cycling trip of the U.S. which has taken them from Pennsylvania to NY, over to Wisconsin, and back down to Vester. "We're aren't sure were we're fixing to go next," Rhett Kelly said, "but probably into Tennessee, maybe to Florida." Kelly learned to properly mumble the Adair County language while he played basketball with Wes Irvin, at Lindsey Wilson College. "I made a conscious effort to speak like people in 'C'lumya' and 'Luvil,' do," he said. He even had to learn to listen and talk faster, he said. He got 60% of his undergraduate degree at Columbia before transferring to Martin, TN. While in Vester the pair visted Marshall Irvin, Wes Irvin's dad, and Wes' cousin Bradley Irvin. Rhett Kelly asked that no one tell his mother that he's riding a motorcycle. "It was hard enough on her when my speech changed," he said. Some notes: Wes Irvin visited Kelly in Brisbane. Perth, a city of 1.2 million, is called the "most isolated city in the world," according to Adam Bell. And Adam Bell's nickname in Vester is "Mick Dundee," though Bell makes no claims having ever rassled crocs.
