FROM "RIVERMEN OF THE CUMBERLAND" A THE KY 90 BRIDGE: From Chris Bennett's log of a boat trip down the Cumberland River. This entry is from June 3, 2007, when the craft was in Cumberland County KY, at mile 423-421. CHRIS BENNETT WRITES "South of Burkesville the Cumberland River channel is very wide. In times of low river flow some areas become very shallow. This slowed our progress the second day of our trip, as we had to get out of the boat, and wade through the cold swift water, while dragging the boat along. During the nineteenth century steam boat era, this also was a problem, especially in dry times. The nineteenth century solution was to stack huge stones up in piles, building stone walls dikes on both sides of the river channel. The intent was to make the river narrower, and deeper. In the photo which accompanies this item, you can see the remains of the stone walls, floods and time have scattered the huge rocks although the bulk of them are still in place. This is also a place where we had to get out of the boat and drag it through the shallow water, also seen in the photo." INDEX to Rivermen of the Cumberland By Chris Bennett The story will be carried in 8 mini chapters, they will go online as they are written. Just click on each chapter title, underlined and linked, as it is posted, to read it. The index will be carried in the "Today" section of ColumbiaMagazine for easy access. Chapter I. "Why would any one take a river trip" tells my history on the river, and what inspired me to go on my trip. Academic calendarsCultural events calendarsSPORTS SCHEDULES
