Chris Bennett Travels in History: Thomas Jefferson's Back Porch

Chris Bennett: Some of my favorite Jefferson quotes are:
  • "Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper"
  • "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent" and
  • "Every generation needs a new revolution"

With photo, Monticello

By Chris Bennett

On July 4th I took my 14 year old nephew on a 5 state, 2000 mile tour of some of the most important historical places in the eastern United States.

We hit attractions like every major Civil War battlefield, and the most important Revolutionary War battlefield, Yorktown.

We went to the Jamestown settlement near Williamsburg, Virginia, and one of our favorites, Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson a very unique individual, but bad with money

Thomas Jefferson was a very unique individual, but he was very bad with money. Although his debts were "in collections" His creditors actually let him live in his home until his death on July 4th, 1826, because of his immortal status as the author of the Declaration of Independence, and service as President.

After his death they seized the estate and sold it. A Jewish family eventually purchased Monticello and tried to preserve it as best they could. They were great admirers of Jefferson, in part because of his views on religious freedom.

Later, Monticello was bought by a private organization dedicated to restoring and preserving the historical home.

Chris Bennett Travels: Thomas Jefferson Back Porch

2008-09-12 - Monticello at Charlottesville, VA - Photo By Chris Bennett.
COMPARATIVE BACKPORCHES 101: "This is a photo of the back of Jefferson's home. I must admit that it is much nicer than my back porch, even though Jefferson's was built over 200 years ago," Chris Bennett writes, but notes some advantages his own back porch has, "In my defense my home has a refrigerator, electric lights, an Apple Computer, a working water closet, with a padded seat, a mail box full of junk mail, and Satellite TV with a DVR. Jefferson didn't have any of this stuff!"
