Reader is shocked at lack of coverage of Sept. 11, 2001

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

I am shocked that there was not one mention of the events on this day in 2001.

On a day that changed America as we once knew it, whether in a big city or small town, you choose to ignore the obvious and put in an article about Lance Burton. While this is probably important since he is from Adair County, it still doesn't mean you should just ignore this day.

2008 Lake Cumberland, GRL fish consumption advisories issued

Lake Cumberland fish consumption advisory added and is lakewide for bass, crappie/rock bass; Green River Lake improves somewhat, with decreasing levels of contaminants, fewer consumption limits. Article below complete only for advisories for Lake Cumberland and Green River Lakes, not to entire list of advisories for Kentucky Lakes.

From Commonwealth News Center

The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH), the Division of Water and the Department for Fish and Wildlife Resources today issued fish consumption advisories for bodies of water in Kentucky.

These advisories are intended to inform the public about the possible risks of eating unrestricted amounts of some fish retrieved from Kentucky's waterways. The advisories were issued due to elevated levels of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and mercury levels found in some species of fish sampled for these substances.

Adair Co. CATS scores within 1 point of goal

Goal was 82.9; actual 82. Two schools meet and exceed goals. Good news on math and science. District reading scores follow statewide downward trend, however. Superintendent Treece says meeting of all teachers on September 22, 2008, will help plan strategy for even more improvements next year

The Adair County School District came within less than one point of reaching its goal on the Commonwealth Accountability Test System (CATS) released yesterday, September 10, 2008, according to Adair County Instructional Supervisor Phyllis Curry. "Our goal was 82.9 and our actual score was an 82," Ms. Curry said.

In almost all areas, there was cause to be happy with the scores, especially in the all important science and math scores. But the District leadership has plans to improve. Superintendent Darrell Treece said. ".While we are certainly pleased with all the efforts that everyone has made, we still need to work diligently to raise our scores." He added, "We already have a planned session with all teachers on September 22 tothoroughly digest these results and to make plans for improvement."

Epicurean Kentuckian: Cornflake Pie

VARIATION on PECAN PIE RECIPE: Made by a friend of mine, from a recipe from the book Sweety Pies. I think it's a variation on a pecan pie recipe, but the topping is cornflakes, covered with melted butter and sugar. It was very delicious, and not overwhelmingly sweet. The cornflakes ended up slightly chewy from the butter/sugar mixture, but in a good way. -PEN. Flickr
