Dental screening program held at Col. Wm. Casey By Paula Garrison, Family Resource Coordinator Students in kindergarten and 1st grade were eligible to receive a free dental screening courtesy of Cumberland Family Medical Center, Inc. and the Family Resource Center. The preventive screening, conducted Thursday, September 4, 2008, included cleaning, flouride varnish, and a student gift pack that included a new toothbrush and toothpaste. Screenings were performed by Dr. Dawn Allen and her hygienist, Julie McWhorter, at Col. Wm. Casey Elementary School. If any evidence of decay or other dental issues were found, the child was referred to his/her personal dentist for furthur treatment and evaluation. The professional dental screening was at no cost to the student; however, a $10 per child fee was required to cover the cost of the sealant and cleaning supplies. Those with KCHIP or Medicaid were exempt from the $10 charge. Those who could not afford the $10 fee were also exempt from this charge. A follow-up dental "report card" was provided to the parents following the evaluation. This program also kept students from having to miss school and parents from having to miss work to schedule an appointment. It decreased fuel expenses for families to not have to drive their child to the dentist. This story was posted on 2008-09-11 10:06:58
