Scenic Adair Co., KY: Beautiful but bit eerie

2008-09-06 - Fairgrounds St., Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Sometimes in the evenings when rainclouds are in the east and the sun is shining from the west, the shades of green of the trees, the patterns of the roofs at the Fairgrounds, and that one tree which appears singly illuminated, make a beautiful, but a bit eerie, scene, as it did Friday afternoon. Feedback: Origin of Boy Gunslinger Alan Reed photo

The picture was taken by Casey County's unforgettable editor, Fred Burkhardt, who took time out of his busy schedule to teach a 4-H kid fllm photography, darkroom techniques

After ColumbiaMagazine.com printed the Photo on the birthday of Alan Reed, now President of Shoreline Communications, as a Boy Gunslinger, several people asked to know more about it. We asked Mr. Reed, and here's what he told us:
The photo was taken by Fred Burkhardt, then owner/editor of The Casey County News in Liberty, KY. He had taken me on as a 4-H photography student.

Mr. Burkhardt let me put on his famous "rattlesnake" hat and his personal leather jacket. Somewhere we came up with a toy gun and he took the photo. We took that photo through the darkroom process.

Fred was loveably crusty (if you knew him you know what I'm talking about) but he took the time for a 12 year old to learn about how to take film out of a cannister in the dark, how to load it onto a developing reel in the dark and how to time and change out the various chemical baths. The same applied to using a gigantic enlarger to get those big images.

Fred Burkhardt had a genuine concern for kids and the power of learning, but he didn't fool around. He meant business and he expected you to listen and learn. Fred was a character, and I will forevermore miss his editorials in the glorious days of The Casey County News.-ALAN W. REED
Thanks. Mr. Burkhardt was a one of a kind old-time country editor. Thanks for sharing your memories of him. -EW

  • What's Cooking in Adair Co, KY: BBQ better than any in Chicago

Well, what was cooking for special orders Labor Day weekend--
and will be cooking again TODAY, Saturday, 6, 2008.

Ol' Joe Barbee's day was made yesterday, August 30, 2008, with the arrival of Iva Hovious, left, and her mother, Joyce Hovious. Though the store was officially closed for Labor Day, Ol' Joe had the smokers going for the wise barbecue fanciers who had ordered take out and catering. Joyce Hovious is originally from White Oak, above Green River on KY 551 and now from Burbank, IL and her daughter is from Worth, IL, close to each other communities near Chicago. "We've got barbecue in Chicago, but nothing that comes close to this," Joyce Hovious said. They were here to stock up for Labor Day picnics, but got enough to warm up for future meals in Chicago and for a tailgate party at the Purdue University football game before just before Halloween. Joyce Hovious says she left Adair County when she was one day old. She was the favorite niece of the late Ivy French, she says. Her parents were the late Dorothy Barnett Redford and Ernie Redford. "He was a Red-ford," she says, "But he always drove a blue Chevrolet." Oh yes, Joyce Hovious attests to a rule of the Epicurean Kentucky, "Barbecued boston butt is best warmed over." That gives hope to the thousands of Ol' Joe fans who fret that, as an orthodox barbecuer, he will not sway from his iron clad rule of being open only on first and third Fridays and Saturdays. "We're not in it for the money," he says. "Our barbecue is a labor of love." The store will be open next on Friday, September 5, and Saturday, September 6, 2008. Many other critics have already rated Ol' Joes better than anything in Owensboro, Memphis, Kansas City, or Lockhart, TX.

Is Columbia Resident A 'Hurricane Magnet?'

Nita Hesford, pictured at left

By Dan Koger

Is Columbia, Ky. resident Nita Hesford a "hurricane magnet?" Consider the evidence.

Three years ago, the mega-storm Hurricane Katrina tore into the Gulf Coast, devastating New Orleans; wiping out towns from Florida to the eastern border of Texas; and, along the way, washing virtually everything Hesford owned, including her meticulously maintained house in Pascagoula, Miss., her furniture, her family heirlooms, all of it, into the Gulf of Mexico.

ColumbiaMagazine.com SPORTS

Blue Raider performance live up to No. 4 in nation NAIA ranking

By Chris Wells, LWC Sports Information Director

A steady downpour did not dampen the Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer 2008 home debut as the Blue Raiders shut out visiting Trinity International (Ill.) University 5-0 on Friday night, September 5, 2008, at Lindsey Wilson Park.

Lindsey Wilson (3-0-0) proved worthy of its No. 4 ranking as the Blue Raiders controlled the game -- despite playing at times in heavy rains -- from the beginning and coasted to the win.
