Dog went home last night, July 30, 2008
A BEAUTIFUL, VERY BLACK, COCKER SPANIEL was found on KY 551 towards Knifley. Anyone who may have lost her, please call. She appears to be house broken, loves to ride in cars and is very sweet. Her hair was so severly matted, that we took her and had her shaved and groomed. If no ones claims her within the next week, she will be Free to a Good Home. We just have too many dogs already to keep her ourselves. Contact Lynne at (270) 634-3075. Agrees on CMs position on gas consumption

Plus: Wants Sidewalks, hiking biking trails, and support for Columbia Rotary Club program

Ed:

I agree with the CM position on gas consumption. But I would add the need for the city and county to work together to make both walking and biking safer. We need to continue the city's expansion of sidewalks and to work on a city/county bike trail. Not an easy task, but I think we should be working toward that end, for both the health and safety of our residents and to encourage tourism. Also, let's all support Columbia Rotary Club's effort to encourage walking as part of our need to improve our health.

s/George Kolbeschlag

See CM's position on gas consumption in "Note" to letter

Editor note: We agree with you on every single point. -CM

Neil Janes, Lauren Goodin tops in Pinewood Tournament

ColumbiaMagazine.com SPORTS

Winners: Neil Janes, Lauren Goodin, Ashley Goodin, Chaz Giles, Bo Biggs, Eric Goodin, Jadell Janes, Mike Sneed, Winston Moore, J.D. Biggs, Richard Stephens, and Greg Coomer. Special thanks to Porter and Edgar, Jeff Feese

By Eric Goodin, Tournament Director, Pinewood Country Club

Neil Janes defended his crown as Pinewood Country Club Champion this past weekend shooting a two day total of 137 (-7). He is a great golfer and a wonderful friend of mine and I am very proud of him.

Coming in second was High School Senior Golfer Chaz Giles with a two day total of 143 (-1). Chaz is my main man and I love him like a son. Congrats, Chaz.

Lauren Goodin is the newest Ladies Champion at Pinewood, shooting a blazing hot 69 (-2) on the first day of competition but cooled to a 79 on day two and still won by 21 strokes over her Aunt, Kim Goodin, my sister. Sorry Kim, had to rub it in.

Ashley Goodin won the First Flight and overall had the second best score in the tournament, but missed the Championship cut with a first day 87 and came back on day two with a 78. So she too also beat Aunt Kim. I love my daughters.

Discovery in a Gradyville hedgerow: Wrens roost safely there

    With unforgettable Betsy Fausnaugh photo

Betsy Fausnaugh made a great discovery this week, sending us a classic photo which all began with an ambitious plan to trim a hedgerow. In the process, she discovered a small family she couldn't disturb.

"Sometimes the neatest things can be found right in front of usif we just slow down," she writes. "I was thinking about trimming up this hedge and then noticed how many little wrens roost in it's safety at night."

Then she made the right decision, opting to leave well enough alone. "Guess I'll have one of the ugliest hedgerows on theoutside, with some of the most beautiful wonders on the inside."There is so much to gain by not doing work that ought not be done in the first place.

Thanks for prayer and concerns for Janice Appleby

    Continued prayers are requested

    To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

As most people who know Janice Appleby already know, she had a major heart attack on Friday, July 19, 2008.

She actually went to the ER on Thursday July 18, they told her they could not find anything wrong, thought she had just pulled her back or hurt her back someway.

Her husband then took her to the ER in Burkesville on Friday morning and they confirmed she was having a heart attack.

They flew her our by helicoptor, said she could go no other way it was too bad. They put in stints, then on Sunday July 21 she had another spell with her heart not staying in rythym they then inserted a pace maker.

She is home and is doing better. She still has to have surgery on both of her legs for blockages. She has still got a long battle in front of her with this type of surgery is what the doctors are telling her. She is still not doing the best, so please keep her in your prayers. Thanks for all the prayers!

    Jennifer Appleby
