(ADV) What's cooking in Adair County today: Not Bobby Flay

Sad to say, who's cooking in Adair County is not Bobby Flay. Despite Kay Burton's challenge to Food Network Chef Bobby Flay to a Pie Baking throwdown at Vester, the Interplanetary Pie Capitol of the Universe, there's no sign of the Iron Chef coming anywhere near.

Reports from Columbia, and other points in vast Adair County reveal no sign of the supposedly fearless competitor. Could be, after the Castro brothers defeated him making Hot Browns, Bobby Flay is just gun shy of Kentucky. That's understandable. But the challenge remains. And we assure him that, other than the ignominious defeat he'll suffer in the throwdown, he'll be treated with the finest hospitality in America.

Anyway, there's an unbelievable array of pies today at Vester. And Bob's Country Kitchen has meatloaf, potato casserole, peas, corn on the hot bar today.

Because of the snow: Bob's is heavy on soups, with Chili, Vegetable, and Pinto Beans, served up with your choice of Saltines or the Cornbread of the Day. See TODAY'S MENU, then come up KY 206 to Vester or call ahead, (270) 384-6774 for expeditious service.

Byron Crawford link: Adair County's last Rosenwald school

Byron Crawford has a wonderful story in today's Wednesday, February 13, 2008, Courier-Journal, on sale at points around Adair County entitled "Rosenwald Schools improved education for blacks in South," which features the last Rosenwald school in Adair County.

Along with the story there is a gorgeous photo by George Kolbenschlag of the school in Flat Woods, behind Santa Fee Baptist Church at the intersection of KY 61 S (Burkesville Road) and Jones Chapel Road.

The story includes quotes from local historian Vonnie Kolbenschlag and from Columbians Donna Frazier and Terry Bradshaw. It features memories of former Columbia-Jackman teachers Mrs. Edna Crowe and Wilda Brown. To see the story online, Click Here. Better yet, brave the snow and buy one of these collectibles at a local news stand.
