Obituary: Frances Louise Brockman Masserant, 89

Mrs. Masserant was a member of a respected northwestern Adair County family and a member of a of St. Marks United Methodist Church, Louisville, a retired realtor and beautician

Frances Louise Brockman Masserant, 89, a resident of Harborside Nursing Home in Louisville, KY, formerly of the Kemp Community in Adair County, KY, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2008, in Louisville, KY, after several weeks illness.

A graveside service will be held Friday, January 18, 2008, at 1:00pmCT, at the Orr Cemetery in Green County, KY, with Rev. David Alexander the officiating clergy. Interment will be in Orr Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10:00am, Friday, January 18, 2008, at Stotts-Phelps-McQuaeary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY.

TRAFFIC ON FAIRGROUND ST was flowing smoothly Wednesday evening, January 16, 2008 at 5:50pmCT after police slowed passage to one lane at a time, above, for about one hour. The incident after the Oakland City University women's basketball team bus cut the corner too sharply and was caught in the ditch. The team was on the way to competition at Biggers Sports Arena on the campus of Lindsey Wilson College. It wasn't a good night for the Oakland City team team; they lost, 75-63. AC Fiscal Court will recognize Recycler of the Month

First recipient will receive award at the February meeting of Adair Fiscal Court

Starting in February, Judge Ann Melton and the Adair Fiscal Court wlll be spotlighting an individual and/or business or organization for outstanding recycling efforts.

"Each month we will be recognizing a person or organization int he community for their outstanding leadership and commitment to the recycling program, and will present a plaque for being Adair County Recycler of the Month," Judge Melton said.

Benefit auction and chili supper for Ashley Bottoms

EVENTS

There will be a benefit auction and chili supper to benefit Ashley Bottoms, who was been off work since being in an auto accident on November 25, 2007. The benefit will be January 18, 2008, at 5:30CT, at the Columbia VFW Building, Fairgrounds ST, Columbia, KY. Ashley does not have any health or disability insurance and will be off work for some time.

She will need additional surgeries before she will be able to go back to work. She and Tim could use any help in these difficult times. Contact persons are Debbie Blevins, (270) 384-4537 or Leslie Sparks (270) 634-1996. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

New movie (2008), Cloverfield, starts Fri. at historic Columbian

Viktoria Krell is MSA Women's Basketball Player of Week

German-native is averaging 13.2 points since becoming a starter

Lindsey Wilson College freshman center Viktoria Krell has been named Mid-South Conference Womens Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending January 13, 2008, according to the conference.

The MSC award is Krells first conference player of the week award this season and the first of her career.

David Butler is Marina Association Member of the Year for 2007

David L. Butler has named Member of the Year by the Kentucky & Tennessee Marina Association 2007.

The award was present at the group's recent annual meeting at the Holiday Inn University Plaza Hotel and Conference by Terry Brown, owner of Emerald Isle Marina and Resort on Green River Lake.

Butler has owned Holmes Bend Marina & Resort on Green River Lake for over 20 years and has been a champion of the fast-growing Adair County tourist industry.

Top leaders in promoting tourism as a component of the Adair County economy, including Sue Stivers, CJE Ann Melton, and Mayor Pat Bell all took notice of the contribution David Butler has made to the tourist industry here, and congratulated him on his latest honor.

Breeding AVFD receives two federal grants totaling $142,407

One grant from Homeland Security for $111.415 for protective gear; second for $30,992 for communications equipment. Judge Melton commends group's tireless efforts obtaining grants

On December 14, 2007, the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department was selected by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to receive Assistance to Firefighter Grant. The grant totaled $111,415 and will be used to purchase Personal Protection Equipment and Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses.

County Judge Executive Ann Melton personally congratulated the South Adair County group: "I would like to congratulate the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department on receiving the FEMA Grant in the amount of $111, 415.00," she said.

Kentucky's December 2007 jobless rate rises to 5.7 percent

FRANKFORT, KY (Jan. 16, 2007) Kentucky's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 5 percent in November 2007 to 5.7 percent in December 2007, according to the Office of Employment and Training (OET), an agency of the Kentucky Education Cabinet. December 2006's jobless rate was 5.4 percent.

The U.S. seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose from 4.7 percent in November 2007 to 5 percent in December 2007, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

2008 Elections: More 51st House candidates likely

Alan Reed strongly considering the race; Wid Harris, Dwayne Loy, getting encouragement to run for Democratic nomination

There were no new filings for the 51st Kentucky House District race yesterday, Tuesday, January 15, 2008.

Now, with less than two weeks before the January 29, 2008, deadline, the race is between declared candidates Russell Montgomery and Asa James Swan, both Republicans. Montgomery and Swan are vigorously campaigning now. Swan made the rounds at the Columbia-Adair County Chamber meeting yesterday, and spent the afternoon Downtown and at other points in Columbia, and Montgomery is seen often around the county.

LWC offers classes for seniors starting January 22, 2008

Area senior citizens can take classes in Christian beliefs, U.S. history and world civilization this spring through the Senior Scholars program at Lindsey Wilson College.

The select classes are free to senior citizens. There is no cost for the classes, but participants must pay for books or any other class fees. Spring classes begin on Tuesday, January 22, 2008.

This is a small way for Lindsey Wilson to show its appreciation to the areas senior citizens, said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. So many of our senior citizens volunteer with numerous groups, churches and civic organizations, and this program is an opportunity for them to enjoy a class and be among college students.

The Senior Scholars courses offered this spring are:
  • Christian Beliefs: 9:30-10:20amCT on Monday, Wednesday Friday; or 9:30-10:45amCT on Tuesday and Thursday
  • U.S. History: 11:30 a.m.-12:20 CT on Monday, Wednesday, Friday; or 2-2:50amCT on Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
  • World Civilization: 11:30am-12:20CT on Monday, Wednesday, Friday; 11am-12:15pmCT on Tuesday and Thursday.

    Adair County is honored again!! Yes, the Relay For Life (RFL) committee and team captains received wonderful news at its 2008 kickoff Tuesday evening. According to the American Cancer Society district and regional directors, of the 120 plus RFL 2007 state events, Adair County ranks 13th in Kentucky.

    Additionally, in the Mid-South Division that includes the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi, with over 500 events, Adair County is ranked 24th. The rankings are based on per capita giving. Relay For Life co-chairs, Angela Dean and Steven Baker, accepted the banners on behalf of all the participants of the 2007 Adair County Relay For Life event.

    2nd Drought Education Program at LWC
    The Adair County Cattlemen's Association with the collaboration the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service will be holding a second Drought Education Program on Pasture Management on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at 10:00amCT in the Lindsey WIlson College Dining Center. Dr. Gary Lacefield, UK Extension Forage Specialist will be speaking on Pasture Management coming out of the 2007 Drought. Registration is free of cost and all producers are invited to attend.
