Letter: Agrees with Donna Rieder

Mike Bell writes:
I agree completely with Donna Rieder concerning the Squires Cemetery. It is a shame that our local government would so readily react to what has not even been requested by anyone as yet. Why is there such a rush to move that cemetery when as yet no one, or so it seems, has requested that the city do so. I am ashamed of our leaders going to such lengths for money, no matter how much they or anyone else claims we need it.

I have had a high regard for our city and county leaders however, if they do this thing because someone just might, maybe, perhaps, request that it be moved, then perhaps we put the wrong ones in there if they are so quick jump for a "Well Maybe".

CPD: Sex offender taken into custody

By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO
Columbia Police Department

Officers received a call phoned in directly to The Columbia Police Department before Noon today, April 25, 2023, regarding a male subject said to be staying at Country Place Apartments as a non-compliant sex offender.

Male subject had left on foot prior to officers arrival. Within this time, a School Resource Officer observed a male subject walking along a tree line on Adair County Public Schools property. Subject noticed cruiser and fled through tree line towards the direction of Dillon Street. A soft lockdown of schools was placed into effect as other School Resource Officers and units from City Police and Sheriff's Office attempted to locate the subject.

The party was soon observed running through tree line along a field off of Dillon Street and the bypass by Officers who then converged on the area on foot. Male was located attempting to hide in a thicket and was taken into custody without incident.

Letter: Squires Cemetery

Comments re: Squires Cemetery on the move to new home

By Darryl Smith

The headstone in the Bobby Morrison photo op belongs to Molly Squires Harmon. She was born December 2, 1862 in Columbia and died June 22, 1888 in Louisville. Fortunately the grave location has been documented and photographed since it is in danger of being destroyed for "progress".

Maybe the board can find descendants that will give permission to relocate the graves, but how do they propose finding/moving the unmarked graves in the cemetery (there are at least 2)? Pretend that they aren't there?

I see this turning into a typical "dig up a shovelful of dirt, throw it in a box, rebury it and call it good" desecration operation that most government cemetery "relocations" devolve into (here's looking at you, Army Corps of Engineers).

Letter: Cemetery Relocation

Annita Dial writes:
As a genealogist I study and respect the lives of people gone on before us. I work diligently to help preserve family histories thru stone cleaning and recorded documentation. Just yesterday I had a lady sign an application for membership into the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). One of the very ancestors on that application was descended from a SQUIRES. Perhaps the people in this cemetery are of some relation to her.

Although I am very much against the relocation/removal of any cemetery/human remains, please let me help. I would be very happy to come and clean these stones (the correct way) for easier identification. Stones must be cleaned a certain way and with certain chemicals so as not to damage them. I would then take pictures of the cleaned stones and share to the matching memorials on Find A Grave. These pictures will preserve the lives of the deceased for generations and genealogists for years to come. --Annita Dial, 270-634-0709

Support youth leadership programs on KY Gives Day

From Sharon Dodson

Why should you support The Center for Rural Development's youth programs on Kentucky Gives Day, May 9, 2023? Just ask Scotty Reams, PharmD, oncology specialty pharmacist at Baptist Health Corbin, and a 2012 graduate of the Rogers Scholars program.

"A contribution to Rogers Scholars on Kentucky Gives Day is an investment in tomorrow. Donors can rest assured 100 percent of their contributions will support the future leaders of Southern and Eastern Kentucky," he said. "In my day-to-day job I provide healthcare to Kentuckians battling cancer and hematologic disorders - that is only possible because someone donated and covered my Rogers Scholars' participation cost."

Kentucky Gives Day is a 24-hour online fundraising event bringing Kentucky nonprofits together for a powerful day of action and philanthropy. To donate to The Center's youth programs, visit https://www.kygives.org/organizations/the-center-for-rural-development.

Letter: Squires Cemetery

Donna Rieder writes:
It is my opinion that moving the Squires Cemetery "residents" is nothing short of sacrilege. To those who were laid to rest there, it was meant to be their final resting place, NOT a temporary resting place until it was inconvenient for later generations, ESPECIALLY for the sake of money and profit. Shame on those who even consider disturbing that which is sacred ground. If a cemetery is cause for some to decline to do business there, then so be it.
