Letter: Grave Robbing

Cynthia Meyer writes:
One would think as old as the tombstones are dating back to the 1800's that those who have taken residency under them considered it then (as it should be now) a permanent residence. Not something that could or should be moved due to an "inconvenience".

Who ever bought the property with the intent of future financial gain should have taken that into consideration prior to the purchase. But then it is not the first time Adair County has looked the other way when cemetery fences and headstones have been removed for personal gain be it industrial or to improve someone's cow pasture.

EDA working to relocate Squires Cemetery from GRCP

Columbia Adair County Economic Development Authority board member Kinzie Rowe is working with the state Registrar of Vital Statistics toward moving a small cemetery from the back of the Green River Commerce Park to another home.

Located two and a half miles north of Columbia off Hwy 55N, the Squires Cemetery is now at the back side of the GRCP industrial park property.

Studying recommendations of state economic development advisors, the board found that the 1800s era cemetery would pose no problem for many prospects, however, some cultures would refuse to consider locating a plant at a park with a cemetery on the property.

Still searching for info on Rev. Hulse photo

Mike Watson is still working to track down location and the names of the men in the historic photo below.

Mike writes, "Can anyone identify these men, the location, or offer any additional information on this photograph? This is almost certainly a cornerstone laying ceremony for a church or religious building of some type. The only identified person is Rev. Frank Bennett Hulse, the man on the left of the three in the center, with his hat in his right hand. Therefore, it is most likely a Methodist group as he was a long-time Methodist minister, one of several in the Hulse family."

The cornerstone says: "Jesus Christ The Chief Corner Stone" so this may be of some help in identifying the location.
