KHSAA expands 16th District to include five schools

By Torrie Osbon, Director of Communications
Metcalfe County Schools

High school basketball tournaments are underway across the state, including in the 16th district, with Metcalfe, Clinton, Cumberland, and Russell Counties.. Next year, the competition gets more challenging.

In January, the KHSAA (Kentucky High School Athletic Association) Board of Control approved a request from Monroe County High School to return to district 16. Monroe moved out of the district in 2005, and at the same time, Russell County moved in. The current realignment does not require a school to move out of district 16, which means five teams will compete in post-season tournaments.

Magic of Giving event sets fundraising record

By Stacey Biggs

The T.J. Community Mission Foundation held its annual fundraiser virtually on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at the Cave City Convention Center. This year's event, The Magic of Giving, embraced a Las Vegas theme and featured world renowned entertainer, Master Magician Lance Burton. The evening brought in a record fundraising total of $100,022 through corporate sponsorships, donations, a raffle prize drawing for a trip to Las Vegas, and an online auction.

Randy Burns, Executive Director of the Foundation, stated, "We are so grateful for the outpouring of generosity from our community and region. We had hoped for a packed house to enjoy the full slate of festivities which had been planned, including the incredible magic show by Lance Burton, but unfortunately, our role as the leading health care provider in this region carries with it a great responsibility to ensure we are leading by example. We look forward to future events which will allow us to celebrate the work of the Foundation in the grandest of ways!"

Gov. Beshear Provides COVID-19 Update

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear and Department for Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack discussed Friday's updated guidance and data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and provided information on living as safely as possible with COVID.

The CDC is now using a new "community transmission" model that uses the number of new COVID-19 cases at a county level, percent of hospital capacity devoted to COVID-19 patients and the number of new patients with COVID admitted to the hospital in the past week. This data is produced, mapped and will be updated weekly at the county level on the CDC website.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) will take the data file produced by the CDC and use it to generate a three-tiered, stoplight-colored map that will be posted on kycovid19.ky.gov to make it easy for Kentuckians to quickly see the transmission level for their own county. This will be updated weekly when the CDC shares and posts its new data.
